LOS ANGELES \u2014 Pet adoptions surged during the coronavirus\u00a0pandemic\u00a0as people in lockdown sought companionship. But as the world has opened up again, the future looks less rosy for a growing number of animals sent to\u00a0shelters\u00a0or adoption centers by owners without the time or money to care for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the rescue world, we kind of saw it coming,\u201d said Chloe Esperiquette, development coordinator at Wags and Walks adoption center in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received prior to the\u00a0pandemic\u00a0five to 10 inquiries per month for people who couldn\u2019t care for their\u00a0dogs\u00a0anymore. \u2026 That\u2019s like doubled since in recent months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wags and Walks, like many similar establishments, is back to full capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery year in the United States, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized,\u201d including 670,000\u00a0dogs, said Esperiquette. \u201cAt Wags we save app<\/a>roximately 1,000\u00a0dogs\u00a0a year. It\u2019s definitely not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surrenders of\u00a0dogs\u00a0to\u00a0shelters\u00a0have risen sharply in recent months as owners in poorer communities have lost income or their homes during the\u00a0pandemic, said Allison Cardona, deputy director of Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, which oversees animal\u00a0shelters.<\/p>\n

Privately run rescue centers that seek to find new homes for abandoned pets are also dealing with a surge in returns of\u00a0dogs.<\/p>\n

Glen Zipper, executive producer of the docuseries<\/a> \u201cDogs\u201d and \u201cCat People\u201d on Netflix, found his calling to save animals after taking a pit bull puppy he rescued on the street to the nearest shelter. To his horror, he was told it would be euthanized.<\/p>\n

Zipper adopted the puppy and quit his job as a criminal prosecutor in New Jersey to work at that shelter, before becoming a TV producer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with animals and finding homes for animals and helping save animals\u2019 lives, I feel like I have a purpose,\u201d Zipper said. \u201cEvery morning I wake up and I feel like I\u2019m making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zipper warns pet owners who can no longer take care of their animals to think twice before returning them to\u00a0shelters\u00a0or adoption agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you reach a wall with an animal where you really don\u2019t think you can responsibly care for a dog, I think the last thing you should do is immedia<\/a>tely go to the shelter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet people know that you can\u2019t care for your dog, say that your dog is up for adoption, and let people come to you and meet the dog and make sure that you choose someone who can responsibly care for that dog and give that dog every bit as much love as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Esperiquette wants potential adopters to know that animals returned to Wags and Walks are not \u201cdamaged goods.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were just a problem for somebody for some reason and they ended up in the shelter for something that wasn\u2019t really their fault and they didn\u2019t really deserve,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
