Outspoken \u201cBlack Widow\u201d star Scarlett Johansson continues to have her franchise character\u2019s back. <\/p>\n

After years of anticipation, Marvel\u2019s leading lady joined her Avengers counterparts and finally starred in her own stand-alone film.<\/p>\n

Leading up to the July 9 premiere of \u201cBlack Widow,\u201d Johansson, 36, caused a bit of a stir when asked about the evolution of her character, Natasha Romanoff \u2014 also known as the titular comic book hero. The two-time Oscar nominee decried the \u201cpiece of ass\u201d hypersexualization of her character throughout the franchise\u2019s evolution.<\/p>\n

Now, Johansson has revealed that there were thwarted attempts \u2014 by male writers \u2014 to make her character a sexy blond bombshell during the script<\/a>ing process of Marvel\u2019s ninth blockbuster installment in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we were doing \u2018Captain America: The Winter Soldier\u2019 \u2014 this is a really funny thing \u2014 the look is fantastic and utilitarian,\u201d Johansson told Fatherly<\/a> on Thursday. \u201cShe first drives up in this beautiful car and picks up Cap \u2014 and initially in the script, it was like, she arrives in her tennis whites, with a blond wig. It was very quickly killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson went on to discuss other<\/a> ways Black Widow was developed from a prop to a three-dimensional character, allowing for her true emergence as a leading franchise character.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter \u2018Iron Man\u2019 to going into \u2018Avengers,\u2019 there\u2019s been an evolution of her look,\u201d Johansson told the outlet. \u201cI think part of that is just gaining the trust of the executives at Marvel and kind of sitting in the character and just being able to make decisions for her. That really happened fairly early on. I mean, in \u2018Iron Man 2.\u2019 \u201d <\/p>\n

Johansson also explained how the creation was a joint effort: \u201cI worked with the amazing, incredible costume designer Mary Zophres<\/a>, who created an absolutely beautiful femme fatale look for the character. And it was very stunning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson goes on to explain the 2014 environment: \u201cYou work with a lot of male writers. Things were shifting. You have to be a part of the change. Audiences are also demanding stuff and there\u2019s a cultural shift, and it feeds everything into a more progressive direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a decade of portraying the character under her belt, Johansson has admitted that, in some ways, she grew in tandem with Natasha Romanoff. <\/p>\n

Johansson told IndieWire<\/a> of the joint evolution: \u201cIt definitely has changed and I think part of that change has probably \u2014 it\u2019s hard because I\u2019m inside it, but probably a lot of that is actually from me, too. I\u2019ll be [36] years old and I\u2019m a mom and my life is different.\u201d <\/p>\n

Johansson \u2014 who is currently expecting a child with her husband, \u201cSNL\u201d star Colin Jost, 39 \u2014 continued, \u201cObviously, 10 years have passed and things have happened and I have a much different, more evolved understanding of myself. As a woman, I\u2019m in a different place in my life, you know? And I felt more forgiving of myself, as a woman, and not \u2014 sometimes probably not enough. I\u2019m more accepting of myself, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marvel\u2019s \u201cBlack Widow\u201d premiered on Friday and is available to watch in theaters and to stream on Disney+<\/a> through Premier Access.<\/p>\n
