Has it really been 20 years since Elle Woods got into Harvard, won her first case and started the bend-and-snap trend?<\/p>\n

\u201cLegally Blonde\u201d premiered on July 13, 2001, and instantly became a hit, was dubbed a feminist masterpiec<\/a>e<\/a> and cemented Reese Witherspoon and other cast members as A-list celebrities. <\/p>\n

The confident, blond sorority princess with a passion for pink and her Chihuahua, Bruiser, set out to prove her ex and everyone wrong on-screen and became a role model for all women. A box office smash, the film went on to spawn a 2003 sequel, a hit Broadway musical, and a soon-to-be-released third movie. <\/p>\n

In honor of the film\u2019s 20th anniversary, some of its stars \u2014 Jennifer Coolidge<\/a>, Jessica Cauffiel and Matthew Davis \u2014 shared set secrets with the New York Times<\/a> as they looked back on creating the bend and snap, toning down the raunchy script<\/a> and their real-life crushes on their castmates. <\/p>\n

Coolidge, who stars as Elle\u2019s manicurist-turned-best-friend-turned-client Paulette, revealed the \u201csobering moment\u201d when she first attempted the infamous bend-and-snap move, which has a \u201c98 percent success rate of getting a man\u2019s attention,\u201d according to Elle.<\/p>\n

While Witherspoon, now 45, quickly picked up the move, Coolidge admitted it didn\u2019t come as easily to her \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t supposed to.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day I said to [the choreographer], \u2018I\u2019m not Elle, I\u2019m the other character, Paulette, and I wouldn\u2019t be really good at the \u2018bend and snap.\u2019 That\u2019s not who I am,\u2019 \u201d the 59-year-old actress said. \u201cAnd [the choreographer] said, \u2018Jennifer, you need to learn this dance number and do your very best, because even if you\u2019re trying to do your very best, you will still be the worst dancer.\u2019 It was a very sobering moment. But she was right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toni Basil, an esteemed choreographer and singer of the \u201980s dance classic \u201cHey Mickey,\u201d<\/a> was hired to work on the bend-and-snap musical number after the move was made up by one of the writers, Kirsten Smith, in a hotel bar.<\/p>\n

\u201cI choreographed iconic things for David Bowie and Tina Turner,\u201d Basil said. \u201cPeople interview me and they go, \u2018You did the \u2018bend and snap\u2019?\u2019 It\u2019s like, what, a one-and-a-half-minute number in the movie? But it was such an integral part.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast also admitted to several behind-the-scene crushes, like Coolidge, who didn\u2019t have to act too hard for her on-screen romance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a crush on [Bruce Thomas, who played] my UPS man,\u201d she said. \u201cBut he was married and had a beautiful wife and children, so I had to shut that off. I didn\u2019t have to act or get excited when he walked in \u2014 it was all true to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cauffiel, who plays Elle\u2019s best friend and Delta Nu sister<\/a> Margot, called out Matthew Davis, who played Elle\u2019s ex Warner and becomes engaged to Selma Blair\u2019s character, Vivian. \u201cI think [Davis] had a crush on everybody. At one point, he had a crush on Alanna [Ubach, who played Serena].\u201d<\/p>\n

But Davis did admit to his crush to \u201cqueen\u201d Blair. \u201cI\u2019ll adore her till the day I die,\u201d he said. \u201cI will always cherish her taking care of me and looking after me because I was so damn green.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ubach, who played alongside Cauffiel as Elle\u2019s other best friend and Delta Nu sister Serena, remembered the chemistry. \u201cI discovered that [Davis had a crush on Blair] during the trial scene,\u201d she said. \u201cWe could see that heart beating every time he was around her. He was so nervous, and I thought, \u2018How could someone looking like\u00a0that\u00a0be as nervous as he is?\u2019 \u201d <\/p>\n

While the movie addressed female empowerment, sexual harassment in the workplace, misogynistic power dynamics, sexist dress codes and inspired women to carry on with fierce confidence, the original tone of the movie started off completely different, according to Cauffiel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first script was very raunchy, to be honest, in the vein of \u2018American Pie,\u2019 \u201d she said. \u201cWhat we know now as \u2018Legally Blonde,\u2019 and what it began as are two completely different films. It transformed from nonstop zingers that were very adult in nature to this universal story of overcoming adversity by being oneself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast even ventured out into the world to do some field research, and Cauffiel and Witherspoon spent time with a sorority at the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe [talked] an entire sorority into going out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Reese offered to buy them free margaritas all night,\u201d Cauffiel recounted. \u201cShe leans over to me as the drinks are on the way and goes, \u2018We\u2019re not drinking anything. We\u2019re drinking water.\u2019 We stayed sober as they got tanked, and we took notes.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
