\n The state\u2019s chief judge penned a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio demanding he correct claims that a closed court system is largely to blame for the city\u2019s violent crime wave \u2014 as the NYPD\u2019s own data proves other factors are causing the bloodshed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI write to correct the numerous inaccuracies you levied against the court system in your public statements at today\u2019s press conference,\u201d Chief Judge Janet DiFiore told de Blasio in a letter that was hand-delivered to the mayor\u2019s Gracie Mansion residence Thursday night and forwarded to 16,000 judicial employees statewide Friday.<\/p>\n

During Thursday\u2019s press briefing de Blasio said, \u201cWe need to have I\u2019m imploring everyone at the Office of Court Administration \u2013 please, we need our court system to run again. We need it to be open next month as fully as humanly possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe owe it to our communities and we owe it to our police officers to restart the court system as vigorously as possible and as quickly as possible. So, please hear our plea, because that\u2019s how we will keep our communities safe,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

Since mid-March when the coronavirus crisis began the city\u2019s criminal court has conducted nearly 19,000 arraignments, 34,000 additional criminal proceedings and over 600 felony preliminary hearings, DiFiore says in the letter.<\/p>\n

Grand jury proceedings were put on hold because of the state\u2019s social<\/a> distancing regulations, but summonses have already been sent out to New Yorkers in anticipation of the panels reconvening in the first half of August, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we share your goals for a safer and stronger city, your plea for a \u2018functioning and open\u2019 court system wholly ignores the reality that the courts have not only always remained open, but have excelled and adapted in ways that were unimaginable only a few months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to do so to serve justice and promote the common good for the people of this state and city, and would appreciate your correcting the inaccurate record you made today and getting the facts straight going forward. New Yorkers expect and deserve nothing less,\u201d DiFiore said in closing the two-page missive.<\/p>\n

City Hall reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the letter, but both the mayor and his Police Commissioner Dermot Shea continued to blame the courts for the city\u2019s shooting surge during Friday\u2019s press briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court system is not functioning. You can\u2019t have the ability to get people off the streets if the court systems do not function,\u201d de Blasio said Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t necessarily need more gun arrests we need the people who are caught to be prosecuted fully,\u201d Shea added.<\/p>\n

But, of the 20 people arrested or wanted for shootings during the first three weeks of June, only one person has a prior case which is an open, indicted gun case, according to NYPD statistics.<\/p>\n

When asked by The Post about the data, Shea claimed he wasn\u2019t familiar with the information.<\/p>\n
