Pandemic journal: Use Trump To Pitch Jabs<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTo convince the vaccine-hesitant to get immunized,\u201d President Biden need only \u201cGive Donald Trump the credit he deserves for the vaccines,\u201d argues Marc Thiessen at The Washington Post<\/a>. Yet Trump\u2019s the only ex-prez not invited to do public-service pitches for the jabs when his \u201cvoice could have made the biggest difference\u201d since pro-Trump states have the lowest vax rates even though Operation Warp Speed was \u201cthe greatest achievement of the Trump presidency.\u201d But \u201cBiden has tried to play down Trump\u2019s role,\u201d seeking to take credit himself, which \u201cis childish.\u201d Fact is, \u201can app<\/a>eal from Trump may very well be the only thing that would convince some of his supporters to get their shots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Journos\u2019 Dubious Data-Theft Role<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Wall Street Journal, Holman Jenkins blasts<\/a> ProPublica\u2019s claim that the \u201cconfidential tax records\u201d it recently published show how the ultrarich \u201csidestep\u201d our income-tax system: By \u201csidestepping,\u201d ProPublica actually means \u201clegally complying with the code.\u201d If the outlet wanted to propose a wealth tax, it could have; instead, its real \u201cintent\u201d seems to be \u201cfashioning a claim to justify\u201d its possession of stolen records. \u201cJournalism is not a blanket exemption to violate the law,\u201d yet clearly someone stole the data, and \u201cProPublica decided it would benefit more from participating in the crime than reporting it.\u201d As for the IRS, why hasn\u2019t it issued warnings to taxpayers that their confidential info was released? \u201cOr should we consider the IRS now also an accessory after the fact?\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: A Ranked-Choice-Voting Lesson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Proponents of ranked-choice voting say it encourages candidates to form alliances and campaign civilly, Bill Scher notes at Washington Monthly<\/a>, but New York City didn\u2019t see that: \u201cThe awkward quasi-alliance between [Kathryn] Garcia and Andrew Yang\u201d basically \u201cfizzled in practice,\u201d as Eric Adams won nearly as many votes as Garcia when Yang was eliminated. Meanwhile, Adams \u201cattacked all his rivals without hesitation. He didn\u2019t navigate Ranked Choice Voting with clever machinations. He steamrolled over it with pugnacious bravado. He understood Rule #1 of Ranked Choice Voting: The person with the most first-choice votes wins 96 percent of the time.\u201d Bottom line: \u201cEven in a Ranked Choice Voting system, nothing beats being your authentic self.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: The Push To Limit Free Speech<\/strong><\/p>\n

Facebook<\/a>\u2019s warnings to users about \u201cextremist\u201d ideas are part of an international push to discourage \u201ccommunications considered radical\u201d that \u201clooks increasingly like a scheme to narrow the boundaries of acceptable discussion and muzzle speech that makes the powers-that-be uncomfortable,\u201d J.D. Tuccille charges at Reason<\/a>. In May, the Biden State Department joined the Christchurch Call to Action, which encourages governments to \u201caddress the issue of terrorist and violent extremist content online.\u201d Yet that raises \u201cconcerns about threats to free speech\u201d that narrow the parameters of discussion beyond what \u201cthe Constitution might allow.\u201d Even for those battling violence and extremism, \u201ctoo many campaigners\u201d seem \u201ceager to turn their efforts into restrictions not just on what people do with their ideas, but also on the range of ideas they are allowed to voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woke watch: The Military\u2019s Misguided Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican soldiers sit through \u2018implicit bias\u2019 and \u2018systemic racism\u2019 workshops and are told\u201d the \u201ccountry they swore to defend is inherently unjust,\u201d while \u201cChinese soldiers prepare for war,\u201d laments Seth Cropsey at The Hill<\/a>. The \u201ccontortions the military and defense establishment have worked themselves into defending \u2018woke\u2019 measures within the armed services\u201d are \u201castonishing.\u201d But the \u201cBiden administration\u2019s directives have placed them squarely in the midst of an increasingly noxious, nihilistic culture war.\u201d Accepting critical-race-theorists\u2019 claims, for example, that the Constitution is \u201cinstitutionally racist\u201d leads to \u201cabsurdity\u201d: All military members \u201cmust be racists for swearing to support and defend an article of white supremacy.\u201d Beware: \u201cFrivolity and sensitivity offer no protection against steel and lead. The former invite the latter.\u201d<\/p>\n
