However, in recent years, he has also branched out and begun lending his talents to blockbusters such as\u00a0<em>Jurassic World<\/em> and <em>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>. In the new movie <em><strong>Ride the Eagle<\/strong><\/em>, he stars as a man whose mother communicates with him from beyond the grave. She co-stars here as the late mother of Johnson\u2019s character, but here we only see her speaking to him through a videotape on a Panasonic TV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at me, talking to you even though I\u2019m dead,\u201d she says. \u201cWell, I\u2019m still here, spiritually.\u201d He\u2019s in a remote cabin, watching her on VHS like this, and at one point, there\u2019s a joke that makes it seem like she\u2019s going to somehow phase through the television and enter the room with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you die, you see \u2026 <em>The Ring<\/em>.\u201d I know it must seem like I have horror movies on the brain, but the trailer for <em>Ride the Eagle<\/em>\u00a0does toy with the spooky possibilities of its scenario before promptly lightening the mood.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson voiced Peter Parker in the animated <em>Spider-Man:\u00a0Into the Spider-Verse,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0the comedic highlights of this trailer come mostly from\u00a0<strong>J.K. Simmons<\/strong>, who also has a Spidey connection by playing J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi\u2019s live-action<em> Spider-Man<\/em> movies (and now the Marvel Studios <em>Spider-Man<\/em> movies). Simmons plays Honey\u2019s old lover, who isn\u2019t above sneaking into her cabin after she\u2019s gone.\u00a0<strong>D\u2019Arcy Carden<\/strong> of <em>The Good Place<\/em> fame also makes an appearance as Leif\u2019s ex-girlfriend, \u201cthe one who got away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than anything, <em>Ride the Eagle<\/em>\u00a0seems like a version of <em>The Bucket List<\/em>\u00a0where it\u2019s a surviving loved one who must\u00a0cross items off the list, learning life lessons from a parent who still wants to impart some of her wisdom even after she\u2019s gone.
