\n Phyllis Somerville, an actress whose character work spanned decades as well as television (\u201cThe Big C,\u201d \u201cNYPD Blue\u201d), film (\u201cLittle Children,\u201d \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button\u201d) and the stage (Broadway\u2019s \u201cTo Kill A Mockingbird\u201d), died of natural causes at her home in New York City on July 16. She was 76.<\/p>\n

Her death was announced by her manager Paul Hilepo.<\/p>\n

Born in Iowa City, Iowa, and soon developing a longstanding desire to move to New York City to become a Radio City Rockette, Somerville was cast in her first Equity job after college when she scored a role at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. The job was the first in a long line of stage credits, including roles in \u201cOver Here\u201d on Broadway, \u201cThe Spitfire Grill: at Playwrights Horizons Off Broadway, \u201cHapp<\/a>iness\u201d at Lincoln Center, \u201cNight Mother\u201d national tour, and various other theater productions.<\/p>\n

Most recently, Somerville appeared on Broadway in the original cast of Aaron Sorkin\u2019s 2018 adaptation of \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird.\u201d In a relatively brief but fiercely performed and scene-stealing role, Somerville played Atticus Finch\u2019s elderly, cantankerous and racist neighbor Mrs. DuBose.<\/p>\n

Somerville\u2019s film credits began with 1981\u2019s \u201cArthur\u201d and would reach into the new century with 2006\u2019s \u201cLittle Children,\u201d 2008\u2019s \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button,\u201d and 2019\u2019s \u201cPoms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her television roles likely gave Somerville her greatest exposure as an actress, with memorable performances in Showtime\u2019s \u201cThe Big C,\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d and, most recently, CBS\u2019 \u201cMadam Secretary,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife,\u201d \u201cBlue Bloods\u201d and \u201cElementary,\u201d and on NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Blacklist\u201d and \u201cNight Shift.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somerville returned to Netflix playing opposite Vincent D\u2019Onofrio in the first season of \u201cDaredevil,\u201d and opposite Jane Fonda and Robert Redford on \u201cOur Souls At Night.\u201d She recurred on the WGN network playing Lady Ray on \u201cThe Outsiders,\u201d and featured in Hulu\u2019s \u201cCastle Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other credits include \u201cLateline,\u201d \u201cNYPD Blue,\u201d \u201cLife on Mars,\u201d \u201cLucky You,\u201d \u201cForgetting the Girl,\u201d \u201cStoker\u201d and \u201cThe Double.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somerville was a member of Off Broadway\u2019s Labyrinth Theatre Company and, according to manager Hilepo, \u201cloved doing the kids\u2019 plays at the 52nd Street Project,\u201d where \u201cshe once got to play a New York Yankee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo she\u2019d been a Yankee and she\u2019d been a New Yorker for over 45 years,\u201d he said, \u201cbut Ms. Somerville was never a Rockette.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
