Tesla started rolling out a long-delayed update to its \u201cself-driving\u201d software over the weekend \u2014 but the company warned drivers to not fall asleep at the wheel just yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new update \u2014 a new beta version of Tesla\u2019s autonomous-driving software that costs $10,000 \u2014 allows cars to use its features on local streets \u2014 a serious upgrade from the current \u201cAutopilot\u201d mode, which is only available on highways. <\/p>\n

Despite continued controversies over safety, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had been promising to extend the feature to local streets since at least 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The latest update, officially called \u201cFull Self-Driving Beta Version 9,\u201d includes a warning that drivers must remain awake and alert at the wheel because the car \u201cmay do the wrong thing at the worst time,\u201d according to images shared by Tesla drivers online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk himself also urged drivers to be cautious, warning, \u201cthere will be unknown issues, so please be paranoid.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The update also includes improvements to the in-car driving display and the camera that measures \u201cdriver attentiveness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Teslas\u2019 in-car cameras will monitor whether drivers are keeping their eyes on the road and will send them \u201caudible alerts\u201d to pay attention while self-driving mode is engaged, according to the update notes. Images from the in-car camera will not leave the vehicle unless users specifically enable data sharing, the notes say.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s use of the words \u201cself-driving\u201d to describe a feature that requires drivers to remain alert may be misleading, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. In May, the agency said it is currently reviewing whether the company is violating the state\u2019s advertising regulations, but did not immedia<\/a>tely reply to a request on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The update is currently only available to members of the Tesla\u2019s \u201cearly access program,\u201d which includes 2,000 Tesla drivers \u2014 most of whom are company employees, according<\/a> to electric vehicle news<\/a> site Electrek.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In June, federal safety regulators revealed they have opened 30 investigations into Tesla crashes that included 10 deaths since 2016 in which \u201cautopilot\u201d mode was suspected to have been in use.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
