TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Steven Spielberg<\/strong> finally gets to make a musical with\u00a0<strong><em>West Side Story<\/em><\/strong>, a new adaptation of the\u00a01957 Broadway musical by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim.\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em> will arrive this December, but for now, here\u2019s everything you need to know about the movie in advance, including the release date, cast and crew, and more.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"West_Side_Story_Release_Date_and_Where_You_Can_Watch_It\"><\/span><strong>West Side Story Release Date and Where You Can Watch It<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><em>West Side Story<\/em> is headed to theaters on <strong>December 10, 2021<\/strong>. It was originally due out last December, but the pandemic got in the way. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>ropriately enough, delaying the release by one year will have this\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em> arriving to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the release of the original 1961 film. As of now,\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em> will be exclusive to theaters.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_West_Side_Story\"><\/span><strong>What is West Side Story<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>West Side Story<\/em> is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical with\u00a0a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, loosely inspired by\u00a0<em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. The musical was previously adapted to film in 1961. That adaptation remains widely acclaimed, and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture \u2013 which means it\u2019s a tough act for Steven Spielberg to follow. But since he\u2019s one of our best living directors, he\u2019ll probably be fine. One key difference between this adaptation and the 1961 film is that Spielberg pushed to make sure\u00a0performers with Hispanic backgrounds played Hispanic characters, and, per <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/03\/a-first-look-at-steven-spielbergs-west-side-story\">Vanity Fair<\/a>, the filmmaker\u00a0\u201cestimates that 20 of the 33 Puerto Rican characters are specifically Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican descent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey brought themselves, and everything they believe and everything about them\u2014they brought that to the work,\u201d Spielberg said. \u201cAnd there was so much interaction between the cast wanting to be able to commit to the Puerto Rican experience. They all represent, I think, a diversity, both within the Puerto Rican, Nuyorican community as well as the broader Latinx community. And they took that seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"West_Side_Story_Synopsis\"><\/span><strong>West Side Story Synopsis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>West Side Story<\/em> \u201ctells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City.\u201d The young lovers are Tony and Maria, who fall for each other despite having connections to feuding street gangs The Jets and The Sharks.\u00a0Maria <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/03\/a-first-look-at-steven-spielbergs-west-side-story\">is<\/a> \u201cpart of the wave of Puerto Rican migrants who traded one island for another when they came to New York seeking a new life in the post\u2013World War II economic boom. Her streetwise Casanova is Tony\u2026who once led a gang of local toughs known as the Jets, but has since outgrown them. Tony\u2019s old friends are engaged in an escalating battle for control of the neighborhood against Puerto Rican rivals who call themselves the Sharks, led by Maria\u2019s brother Bernardo.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"West_Side_Story_Director_Crew_and_More\"><\/span><strong>West Side Story Director, Crew, and More<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>West Side Story<\/em> is directed by a young up-and-comer named <strong>Steven Spielberg<\/strong>. That kid\u2019s going places, let me tell you. <strong>Tony Kushner<\/strong>, who has worked with Spielberg on\u00a0<em>Munich<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Lincoln<\/em>, wrote the script. Kushner is also an executive producer.\u00a0<strong>Justin Peck <\/strong>choreographed the musical numbers in the film while Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor <strong>Gustavo Dudamel<\/strong> handled the recording of the score, which was arranged by composer and conductor <strong>David Newman<\/strong>. <strong>Jeanine Tesori<\/strong> supervised the cast on vocals while <strong>Matt Sullivan<\/strong> served as executive music producer for the film. Spielberg produces along with <strong>Kristie Macosko Krieger<\/strong> and<strong> Kevin McCollum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"West_Side_Story_Cast\"><\/span><strong>West Side Story Cast<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><em>West Side Story<\/em> stars\u00a0<strong>Ansel Elgort<\/strong>* as Tony; <strong>Rachel Zegler<\/strong> as Maria; <strong>Ariana DeBose<\/strong> as Anita; <strong>David Alvarez<\/strong> as Bernardo;<strong> Mike Faist<\/strong> as Riff; <strong>Josh Andr\u00e9s Rivera<\/strong> as Chino; <strong>Ana Isabelle<\/strong> as Rosal\u00eda; <strong>Corey Stoll<\/strong> as Lieutenant Schrank; <strong>Brian d\u2019Arcy Jame<\/strong>s as Officer Krupke; and <strong>Rita Moreno<\/strong>, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 movie, as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works.<\/p>\n<p>*It\u2019s worth noting that\u00a0in 2020, a woman accused Elgort of sexual misconduct in 2014 when she was 17 and he was 20. Elgort\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ansel-elgort-says-relationship-accuser-was-consensual-not-assault-1512368\">denied<\/a>\u00a0the allegation and said the relationship was brief and consensual.
