Joe Biden may not officially label his environmental plan \u201cthe Green New Deal,\u201d but it\u2019s really not much different from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s \u201ctop-down, centralized, command-and-control\u201d extravaganza of that very name, observes Reason\u2019s Ronald Bailey. From its left-wing rhetoric to its specific calls for clean energy, Biden rehashes earlier Green New Deal ideas, like phasing out gasoline-powered cars, forcing buildings to abide by \u201ca net-zero emissions standard by 2030\u201d and promoting unions \u2014 the \u201csame economic policies\u201d progressives have \u201clong advocated.\u201d The price tag: $5 trillion over 10 years. A far more sensible and cheaper solution to climate change, contends Bailey, would encourage \u201crapid economic growth,\u201d ensuring that future generations have \u201cthe wealth and superior technologies\u201d to tackle the issue.<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Time to Invest in India<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United States \u201curgently\u201d needs \u201cto deepen its economic integration\u201d with India, particularly after that nation\u2019s recent conflicts with China, argues Noah Smith at Bloomberg. Indeed, opening US markets to Indian goods even without a \u201creciprocal opening by India\u201d makes \u201cgeopolitical sense\u201d \u2014 because boosting an ally\u2019s economy makes it \u201cmore able to resist military encroachment by rivals.\u201d Better still: \u201cincreased direct investment by the US.\u201d Economists say such investments boost growth and promote technology<\/a> transfers that help a country develop. \u201cMaking India a richer, more advanced and more powerful country would strengthen it as a bulwark against Chinese domination of Asia.\u201d India\u2019s already taking steps to attract US investment; now \u201cthe US needs to do its part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campaign watch: Joe Clueless on Capitalism<\/strong><\/p>\n

One thing stands out in Joe Biden\u2019s otherwise \u201cunremarkable\u201d economic vision, Allison Schrager notes at the City Journal: his \u201cvow to \u2018put an end to the era of shareholder capitalism.\u2019\u201d Unclear is whether that means \u201ca corporation should simply consider the best interests of its workers, its community and the country\u201d \u2014 or that Biden will \u201cdemand that corporate boards and officers explicitly account for the interests of other stakeholders.\u201d Fact is, \u201cshareholder primacy,\u201d which \u201cremains baked into American corporate governance,\u201d has \u201cmany benefits\u201d for all \u201cstakeholders,\u201d including aligning the \u201cincentives of corporate managers, a corporation\u2019s owners and the broader community\u201d and providing an objective measure of a company\u2019s success. By contrast, \u201cforcing companies to behave more like governments and acquire more representative constituents will distort business, dampen value and erode prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education expert: School Choice Is the Answer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two \u201cpolitical earthquakes\u201d offer \u201cvastly different\u201d ways to boost minority learning, writes Lance Izumi at the Washington Examiner. The first: California\u2019s push to repeal Proposition 209 and restore \u201crace-based admissions\u201d in college admissions and other areas. Yet research shows \u201cK-12 public education, not Prop. 209, is the real obstacle\u201d for minorities, which may be why 60 percent of blacks and Hispanics nationally oppose the use of race in admissions. Polls also show minorities want more school choice, and the second earthquake \u2014 the Supreme Court\u2019s recent green light to use public scholarship programs at religious schools \u2014 could help provide it. \u201cRigorous studies\u201d on scholarship programs have found \u201ca positive impact on student performance, graduation rates and college enrollment.\u201d Indeed, choice, not \u201crace preferences,\u201d is the \u201ctrue civil-rights issue of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Religion beat: Hands Off Hagia Sophia <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is just nothing like Hagia Sophia,\u201d the legendary cathedral that has \u201cinspired awe\u201d since its completion in 532, kvells Thomas Madden at First Things. \u201cFor nine centuries it was a church, for nearly five centuries a mosque and for almost one century a museum.\u201d Now, thanks to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, it\u2019s a mosque again. Some liken that switch to the \u201cstatue-toppling and cancel culture in the US and Europe,\u201d but it\u2019s really just \u201cpolitical\u201d: As his popularity among moderates and progressives has \u201cfaltered,\u201d Erdogan is \u201cincreasingly reliant on rural Islamic conservatives to keep him in power.\u201d Yet the \u201chistory of the West is bound up in that remarkable building,\u201d sighs Madden. \u201cLet Hagia Sophia be Hagia Sophia.\u201d<\/p>\n
