(Get it? \u201cTail\u201d end? She\u2019s playing a mermaid, and mermaids have tails!) We\u2019re now mid-way through 2021 and filming on the movie has finally come to an end, and today Bailey shared the first look at her iteration of the headstrong and adventurous Ariel to mark the occasion.<span id=\"more-682990\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-683004 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Little-Mermaid-first-look-full-700x939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"939\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Little-Mermaid-first-look-full.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Little-Mermaid-first-look-full-360x483.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Little_Mermaid_First_Look\"><\/span>The Little Mermaid First Look<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">And just like that, that\u2019s a wrap,\u201d Bailey <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HalleBailey\/status\/1414648705530175490\">wrote in a post on Twitter<\/a>\u00a0accompanied by this photo. \u201cA<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">fter auditioning for this film when I was 18 just about to turn 19, to now finishing filming through a pandemic when I turned 21\u2026we have finally made it,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00a0feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->As for the photo itself, while the setting looks beautiful, the sun keeps Bailey in a prominent silhouette giving us only a hint of what to expect when we finally get to see her on the big screen. Her mermaid tale will almost certainly be augmented with CGI, but her hair doesn\u2019t seem to be the iconic bright red of the animated character from the Ron Clements and John Musker-directed 1989 movie, which kicked off the Disney Renaissance and ushered in a new \u201cwave\u201d of animation domination for the studio. I\u2019m sure a very small but loud contingent of\u00a0<em>Little Mermaid<\/em> \u201cpurists\u201d will continue to freak out over the fact that a Black woman has been cast in the role, but for people who actually have lives and priorities and a healthy relationship to the content we consume, Bailey\u2019s casting remains an exciting prospect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Marshall<\/strong> (<em>Chicago<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Mary Poppins Returns<\/em>) directs this live-action remake, which will feature songs from the animated original by\u00a0<strong>Alan Menken<\/strong>\u00a0and the late\u00a0<strong>Howard Ashman<\/strong>, as well as new songs by the returning Menken (music) as well as the \u201che\u2019s so hot right now\u201d\u00a0<strong>Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/strong>\u00a0(lyrics).
