It went from \u201crestaurant of the summer\u201d to \u201cnot woke enough\u201d in just 24 hours.<\/p>\n

One day after celebrated Brooklyn rooftop restaurant Outerspace received a glowing review in the New York Times<\/a>, the chefs and general<\/a> manager all walked out. One chef issued a scathing denunciation of the eatery\u2019s fashion-world owners, accusing them of misogyny, a \u201ccolonial\u201d attitude toward the food and their employees, and \u201cskimming\u201d bar proceeds.<\/p>\n

The funky spot on the Bushwick\/East Williamsburg border, which featured a format of rotating chefs, \u201chas officially come to an end\u201d for the summer, its website said with no explanation.<\/p>\n

Times critic Pete Wells on July 6 proclaimed Outerspace to be \u201cthe restaurant of this New York summer.\u201d He gushed over its Vietnamese-Malaysian fusion cooking, \u201cmeticulously prepared $40 main courses served in compostable paper bowls\u201d and a gritty setting \u201clike the picnic area of some postindustrial Jurassic Park.\u201d<\/p>\n

The place shut down the next day. Wells reported that the owners and chefs attributed it to issues over \u201csustainability\u201d and the demands of a heavy work load to serve up to 300 people a night.<\/p>\n

But one of the chefs, Chinchakriya Un, posted a vicious Instagram attack on July 8 with more than 98,000 views that was clearly aimed at Outerspace owners Wells Stellberger and Molly McIver.<\/p>\n

Under her Instagram handle<\/a> Kreung, the name of her Cambodian food business, Un denounced \u201cculture vultures dressed in normcore\u201d who practiced \u201cdated power dynamics\u201d and \u201cinternalized misogyny.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tirade stated that \u201chow we got here in the first place [right after Memorial Day] began with a colonial narrative pitched by them. I will hold myself accountable for missing so many red flags,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

The post also suggested that \u201cwhile we worked twenty hours a day,\u201d the owners made a fortune off their bar business\u201d where they \u201cskimmed an extra 10% off the top.\u2019\u2019 She said they were \u201cwhite people [who] feel entitled to writing narratives that don\u2019t belong to them.\u201d For good measure, Un wrote, presumably referring to the Times, \u201cI will talk about how this write-up benefits them, exposes their white saviorism, but also saves their ass from any foul play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strangely, on July 7, the day Wells\u2019 review ran in print, Un posted on Instagram, \u201crestaurant review! So incredibly proud of our team!\u201d<\/p>\n

Un\u2019s loud exit over \u201ccolonial\u201d abuses was ironic in light of the owners\u2019 politically correct backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Stellberger and McIver founded Outerspace\u2019s home, the event space known as 99 Scott, in 2016. Stellberger comes from the woke fashion-design world, where he once worked for Marc Jacobs. <\/p>\n

McIver is a sister of former mayoral candidate Kathryn Garcia, who is committed to liberal causes including environmental rescue, \u201cfair housing\u201d and income equity. Garcia invested in McIver\u2019s new sneaker business in 2014, The Post reported at the time. Garcia held one of her first-round primary-viewing parties at 99 Scott.<\/p>\n
