Cubans poured into the streets by the tens of thousands Sunday to protest the Communist government\u2019s deadly failures, chanting \u201c\u00a1Ya no tenemos miedo<\/em>!\u201d and \u201c\u00a1Abajo la dictadura!<\/em>\u201d and \u201c\u00a1Libertad<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re no longer afraid.\u201d \u201cDown with the dictatorship.\u201d \u201cFreedom.\u201d This was no mere complaint about the COVID toll, nor even the regime\u2019s refusal to let international relief groups bring in food and medicine.<\/p>\n

President Miguel Diaz-Canel responded by 1) blaming the United States, 2) shutting down the Internet and 3) ordering police to open fire on the demonstrations and start \u201cdisapp<\/a>earing\u201d top dissidents.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden on Monday . . . issued a perfectly fine statement: \u201cWe stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba\u2019s authoritarian regime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Live <\/em>remarks would have sent a stronger message, but maybe he didn\u2019t want to step on his anti-crime theme for the day.<\/p>\n

What if the people have lost their fear, and keep up the demonstrations despite Diaz-Canel\u2019s bloody crackdown? The White House better be figuring out what it can do (beyond more press releases) to quietly help neighbors struggling for freedom.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
