\n Barely weeks after China imposed its new Hong Kong-crackdown law, citizens there courageously showed Beijing what they think of it \u2014 by showing up last weekend to an unofficial \u201copposition primary\u201d among pro-democracy candidates. The Communists\u2019 response: threaten prison for all who voted.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s more than 600,000 people who showed up to choose among supporters of the months of demonstrations against Beijing\u2019s efforts to crush the city\u2019s freedoms.<\/p>\n

Those protests stopped Hong Kong\u2019s legislature from acting, so the mainland rulers had the puppet national parliament do the job, sitting out of reach in Beijing \u2014 in blatant violation of the accord that restored Chinese sovereignty over the city but with a commitment to preserve its citizens\u2019 freedoms.<\/p>\n

The new \u201cnational security\u201d law effectively criminalizes any resistance to the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s whims, rendering the city\u2019s independent legal system and local laws irrelevant.<\/p>\n

Hence the threat to the independent voters. As Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam (the Piglet to President Xi Jinping\u2019s Pooh) put it, if the idea was to elect legislators \u201cwith the objective of objecting or resisting every policy initiative,\u201d that counts as \u201csubverting the state power\u201d \u2014 which means voting could earn you years in prison.<\/p>\n

Lester Shum, one of the candidates, called the turnout a sign \u201cHong Kong people have still not given up.\u201d When they insist that democratic dissent is treason, how can you give up?\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
