The actress, who stars as Blanca, Mother of the House of Evangelista, on FX\u2019s\u00a0<em><strong>Pose<\/strong><\/em>, is only the third transgender performer nominated in the history of the awards, across all categories.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pose<\/em> has been full of television breakthroughs, putting the stories of LGBTQ+ people of color in the spotlight. The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> draws heavily from the 1990 documentary\u00a0<em><strong>Paris is Burning<\/strong><\/em>, which details the unique ballroom culture in New York City in the late 1980s. There\u2019s been some progress \u2014\u00a0<strong>Laverne Cox<\/strong>\u2018s nominations for her role as Sophia on\u00a0<em><strong>Orange is the New Black<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>signaled the beginning of nominations for transgender performers. The problem is that it\u2019s taken this long in the first place, and we still have so far to go. After all, cisgendered, heterosexual white guy <strong>Jeffrey Tambor\u00a0<\/strong>has\u00a0<em>won<\/em> two Emmys for pretending to be a transgender woman on the Amazon series\u00a0<em><strong>Transparent<\/strong><\/em><em>.\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing that a straight man has won awards for portraying the transgender experience when people who have actually lived it have not been afforded the same opportunities. Cox has been nominated four times and never won; the only other acting category nominee was Rain Valdez for\u00a0<em><strong>Razor Tongue,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>who also did not win.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/news\/mj-rodriguez-first-trans-woman-lead-acting-emmy-1235014189\/\">interview with Variety<\/a>, Rodriguez said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI do believe this is a pivotal moment. There\u2019s never been a trans woman who has been nominated as a leading outstanding actress and I feel like that pushes the needle forward so much for now the door to be knocked down for so many people \u2014 whether they be male or trans female, gender nonconforming, LGBTQIA+, it does not matter. A moment like this extends and opens and elongates the possibilities of what\u2019s going to happen and I believe the Academy is definitely making it possible and their eyes are more than open. Yes, I do believe they\u2019re going to continue, and I also feel like we\u2019re going to keep speaking and encouraging and informing and educating people around the world. I think that\u2019s the most important thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->Rodriguez\u2019s character, Blanca, gives many women a chance to see themselves represented in a way they never have before. After all, how many HIV-positive, transgender, Afro-Latina characters have you seen on TV, besides as tragic tropes on crime shows? Blanca goes through her share of tragedies, but she\u2019s also given a chance to shine in a way few characters like hers have before.
