“#Peter Thiel protege Blake Masters launches US Senate run in Arizona<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

An executive at Peter Thiel\u2019s venture capital fund is running for a US Senate seat with $10 million in backing from his boss. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Blake Masters, the 34-year-old chief operating officer at investment firm Thiel Capital and a former protege of the billionaire at Stanford, announced Monday that he is running as a Republican to unseat Arizona Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In his campaign launch, Masters pledged to \u201ccompletely end illegal immigration\u201d and fight \u201cindoctrination\u201d in the school system.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Masters has never held public office and faces a crowded GOP primary field that includes state Attorney General<\/a> Mark Brnovich and wealthy energy executive Jim Lamon.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, his campaign rocketed into legitimacy when Thiel gave an eye-watering $10 million to a super PAC supporting him, Politico first reported<\/a>.\u00a0Thiel also donated $10 million to a PAC supporting another one of his employees, \u201cHillbilly Elegy\u201d author and Ohio senate candidate J.D. Vance.<\/p>\n

To put those numbers into perspective, the average Senate candidate in 2018 spent $15.7 million over the course of their entire campaign, according<\/a> to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. The group also told Politico that Thiel\u2019s donations to PACs supporting Masters and Vance were the largest single contributions to outside groups supporting Senate candidates in history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Post, Masters described having close ties to Thiel, with whom he co-authored the best-selling 2014 book \u201cZero to One.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s technically my boss and I\u2019m working for him and with him and he\u2019s also a friend,\u201d Masters said of Thiel, adding that he planned to quit his job and campaign full time at some point in the future. \u201cHe\u2019s a mentor type figure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Masters also dismissed critics who say that Thiel\u2019s hefty donations could mean that he would be in his former boss\u2019 pocket if he wins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJoke is on Peter if that\u2019s what he thinks,\u201d said Masters in regard to the prospect of Thiel buying influence. He said the pair would be \u201cfriends and that\u2019s it\u201d if Masters is elected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That could be a boon for Thiel, who is the co-founder and chairman of Palantir \u2014 a multibillion-dollar data analysis company that has worked with agencies like Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and US Customs and Border Patrol \u2014 as well as a major investor in Anduril, another tech company that works with CBP.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked if his plan for the border as Senator would include giving more government contracts to his current boss\u2019 companies, Masters did not say.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m familiar with those companies and bullish on them,\u201d he said in reference to Palantir and Anduril. \u201cI\u2019m open to whatever works.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said other technology he would like to see deployed on the border includes drones and infrared beams and praised former President Donald Trump\u2019s concept of a border wall as a \u201cvery nice, bold piece of technology.\u201d <\/p>\n

Masters is highly critical of the Democratic party and Joe Biden, but he offered praise of Lina Khan, the president\u2019s pick to head the Federal Trade Commission who has taken aggressive antitrust stances against Amazon and other tech giants. \u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
