And in an effort to compete with each other and woo subscribers,\u00a0those services have been looking to acquire companies that would help them expand their libraries. These are the circumstances under which indie studio\u00a0<strong>A24<\/strong> may be looking to broker a sale.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/news\/inside-a24-billion-dollar-sale-1235018988\/\">Variety<\/a> reports that A24 has been testing the market for a potential sale, \u201cfloating an asking price of between $2.5 billion to $3 billion.\u201d If that seems like a steep amount, consider the climate, where MGM recently sold to Amazon for $8.6 billion, and where\u00a0smaller banners like\u00a0Reese Witherspoon\u2019s Hello Sunshine is said to be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/reese-witherspoons-media-company-hello-sunshine-is-exploring-a-sale-11625605587\">valued at $1 billion<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->By comparison, when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, it paid $4 billion for the studio, which now seems like a lowball figure. The\u00a0moviegoing terrain has changed considerably since then, with the coronavirus shuttering theaters and\u00a0bringing the industry closer to\u00a0the feared \u201cimplosion\u201d that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg spoke of back in 2013. The studio is known for its innovative marketing, like binding the 150-tweet thread that inspired <em>Zola<\/em> into a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.a24films.com\/products\/the-story-by-aziah-king\">clothbound hardcover<\/a>. It\u2019s also known for its spooky trailers, some of which have been slightly misleading, setting up audiences (and disgruntled CinemaScore responders)\u00a0with monster-movie expectations, when they were really about to experience a slow-burn psychodrama. We should have known what to expect by the time\u00a0<em>Hereditary<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Midsommar<\/em> rolled around, but alas.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, A24 isn\u2019t only an indie-horror boutique. It\u2019s also responsible for \u201csci-fi caviar\u201d (as iTunes likes to package it) such as\u00a0<em>Ex Machina<\/em>, <em>High Life<\/em>, and <em>Under the Skin<\/em>. In addition, the studio has received dozens of Oscar nominations for films like <em>Room\u00a0<\/em>and a big\u00a0Best Picture win in 2018 with <em>Moonlight<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Per Variety, the move to potentially sell is one that has been going on under the radar for the last year and a half, yet the trade cites sources within the studio that say\u00a0A24 is now \u201cfocused on expansion and is not prioritizing a sale.\u201d We often hear rumblings of this kind right before the deals go through, so if one does h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en soon, what would A24 look like under a major <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> company? Would it get swallowed up or might it prosper in new ways?<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->The studio\u00a0already has an existing deal with Apple, which has debuted Sofia Coppola\u2019s <em>On the Rocks<\/em> and other films as Apple TV+ exclusives. However, they\u2019ve reportedly \u201cpassed on numerous titles\u201d that A24 was floating, so that may be a wash.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming a subsidy of a larger corporation\u00a0might allow A24 to reach a new audience. Alternatively, its niche appeal might get lost in the sea of subscription options and we may see the edges of a unique studio sanded off.
