\n The Yankees\u2019 outlook got a little better on Friday, when DJ LeMahieu reported to spring training 2.0 following his battle with COVID-19.<\/p>\n

The All-Star took grounders on the field at Yankee Stadium and Aaron Boone said he worked out and hit in the batting cage, but the manager added he\u2019s not ready to say whether LeMahieu will be available for Opening Day in Washington on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to commit one way or the other,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cWe\u2019ll just welcome him back to the building and see where we are the next couple days.\u201d<\/p>\n

The manager added LeMahieu would work out and hit at Yankee Stadium again Saturday and the team had mapp<\/a>ed out the next four or five days to help get him live at-bats \u201cprobably in the next couple days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boone acknowledged it would be tough for LeMahieu to be ready so soon after missing all of spring training 2.0.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be a pretty quick turnaround, obviously,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cFirst and foremost, we want to make sure we bring him back safely and smartly and when he comes back, he\u2019s ready to roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

LeMahieu was placed on the injured list before camp officially opened. He\u2019ll get as many live at-bats as possible over the next week to determine whether he\u2019s up to facing ace right-hander Max Scherzer right out of the gate, but the Yankees feel the bigger challenge might be seeing if he\u2019s up to the rigors of playing every day after being out.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of it is, \u2018Where are his legs built up to?\u201d Boone said. \u201cCan he play day-in and day-out nine-inning game<\/a>s. \u2026 I don\u2019t worry so much about DJ finding his timing. I\u2019m pretty certain that will come back quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

LeMahieu\u2019s approach at the plate gives the Yankees confidence he won\u2019t be impacted as much by the layoff as some others might be.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an individual thing, but when you\u2019re one of the best in the world at bat-to-ball, you build up quicker,\u2019\u2019 Boone said LeMahieu, whose .893 OPS a year ago was behind only Aaron Judge\u2019s .921 among everyday players in the Yankee lineup.<\/p>\n

Hitting coach Marcus Thames agreed with Boone\u2019s assessment of LeMahieu, with a caveat.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a baseball rat,\u2019\u2019 Thames said. \u201cHe knows his swing and knows what guys are trying to do to him. That part will help him, but he\u2019s still human. He\u2019s got to get some reps.\u201d<\/p>\n

LeMahieu wasn\u2019t allowed to be at Yankee Stadium for spring training 2.0 until he tested negative twice. The Yankees have three exhibition games coming up before the regular season begins.<\/p>\n

And the Yankees\u2019 primary concern is that the 32-year-old stays healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna take our time and make sure he\u2019s healthy,\u2019\u2019 Thames said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to rush him. DJ worked really hard even when the shutdown [was happening] in Tampa. He was there getting work in. We\u2019ll take it slow and he\u2019ll let us know when he\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s no easy feat considering the unknowns of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re learning like the rest of the world and medical industry more and more about this virus and the effects of it,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cIt affects so many different people in so many different ways. I guess it\u2019s some comfort in DJ\u2019s case, even though he continued to test positive, he felt normal throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Boone is encouraged just having the Yankees\u2019 most consistent hitter around.<\/p>\n
