Bush was president, underscoring President Joe Biden\u2019s reluctance to more forcefully curb petroleum production in the face of industry and Republican resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The Interior Department approved about 2,500 permits to drill on public and tribal lands in the first six months of the year, according to an Associated Press analysis of government data. That includes more than 2,100 drilling approvals since Biden took office January 20.<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico and Wyoming had the largest number of approvals. Montana, Colorado and Utah had hundreds each.<\/p>\n<p>Biden campaigned last year on pledges to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-2020-ap-fact-check-joe-biden-donald-trump-pennsylvania-fa798602a357d0f4a765739e36f4f82b\">end new drilling on federal lands\u00a0<\/a>to rein in climate-changing emissions. The technique went into widespread use during the Obama-Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Some liberal Democrats wish Biden were taking a tougher line against fracking now.
