The Subway sandwich chain\u2019s new menu items, which were rolled out in a blaze of publicity on Tuesday, belong in the real subway \u2014 the deeper underground,\u00a0the better.<\/p>\n

The \u201clargest menu update\u201d in the history of the world\u2019s largest fast-food company (37,500 outlets) lays a big, fat, sometimes smelly egg. <\/p>\n

The sandwiches are what you grudgingly put up with in an airport snack bar after a 14-hour flight. Strangely, the more elements they contain \u2014 from pickles to mustard to onions to olives \u2014 the less they taste of anything.<\/p>\n

Poor Subway is under siege on all fronts. It closed thousands of stores worldwide in 2020. It\u2019s\u00a0battling disgruntled franchise holders and fending off charges that its \u201cfamous\u201d tuna contains no tuna.<\/p>\n

The menu update is supposed to bring salvation\u00a0with all-new sandwiches\u00a0and \u201cimproved ingredients\u201d throughout the\u00a0product line.<\/p>\n

I took the plunge on \u201cTurkey Cali Fresh\u201d and \u201cSteak Cali Fresh,\u201d both served on what Subway calls \u201cItalian artisan bread with crispy crust and soft center.\u201d The crusts were mush, the centers doughy.<\/p>\n

Chunks of mealy \u201csteak\u201d\u00a0looked and tasted like Fourth of July barbecue leftovers. Oven-roasted turkey is \u201csliced deli thin,\u201d but the flavor\u2019s even thinner, tasting more like paper than poultry.<\/p>\n

Hickory-smoked bacon on both sandwiches was a gristly, flavorless affair beyond rescue by a smear of smashed avocado.\u00a0The only redeeming element was decent mozzarella from \u201caward-winning cheesemakers in Wisconsin,\u201d once I found it beneath a heap of spinach, gummy sauces and laughably lame tomato slices.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0the controversial \u201cpremium 100 percent wild-caught tuna\u201d: A New York Times laboratory investigation early this year found that it contained zero percent tuna DNA.<\/p>\n

Consumer groups filed lawsuits. Subway responded that cooking the tuna breaks down the DNA so lab tests can\u2019t detect it, but \u2014 trust us! \u2014 yes sireee, it\u2019s all there.<\/p>\n

In the spirit of science<\/a>, I had it without any condiments, the better to focus on the problematic piscine.<\/p>\n

It had a cat food-y perfume. It puzzlingly tasted like it might once have been tuna, but how long ago was beyond my trained palate\u2019s ability to discern.<\/p>\n

How\u00a0long Subway can survive this latest debacle is anyone\u2019s guess as well.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
