White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Wednesday said the Biden administration will continue talks aimed at forging a new Iran nuclear deal \u2014 despite federal authorities announcing this week that four Iranian intelligence operatives schemed to kidnap a US-based journalist and smuggle her to Iran in a bid to silence her criticism of the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

Psaki said at her daily press briefing that \u201cwe will continue to pursue those talks, pursue the diplomatic path forward, which we think is in our interests and continues to be constructive.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Psaki said \u201cwe have never assessed Iran to be a good actor\u201d and noted that President Biden recently ordered airstrikes against Iran-backed groups in Syria and Iraq that allegedly threatened US troops.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors in New York revealed Tuesday<\/a> that four Iranian agents allegedly plotted to abduct Brooklyn-based Voice of America commentator Masih Alinejad, possibly by loading her onto a speedboat destined for Venezuela.<\/p>\n

The Biden administration previously said nuclear talks aren\u2019t linked to the Islamic theocracy\u2019s treatment of US citizens.<\/p>\n

In May, Psaki said US efforts to free Americans detained in\u00a0Iran are \u201cseparate\u201d from negotiations to curb Iran\u2019s\u00a0nuclear\u00a0program \u2014 as the US government denied\u00a0an\u00a0Iran\u00a0state media<\/a> report that the US would release $7 billion in\u00a0Iranian\u00a0assets in exchange for the release of four Americans.<\/p>\n

Many Democrats in Congress\u00a0are pushing Biden to rejoin\u00a0the 2015\u00a0Iran\u00a0nuclear\u00a0deal, and US diplomats have been in Vienna this year for talks on how to resurrect that deal, which former President Donald Trump repudiated in 2018, arguing it did too little to constrain Iran.<\/p>\n

Biden last month vowed to prevent\u00a0Iran\u00a0from developing\u00a0nuclear\u00a0weapons \u201con my watch\u201d as he hosted outgoing Israeli President Reuven Rivlin at the White House, but critics argue that harsh Trump-era sanctions should not be lifted.<\/p>\n

In January 2016, the Obama administration\u00a0airlifted $400 million in cash<\/a> to\u00a0Iran and unfroze an additional $1.3 billion in assets as part of the multilateral nuclear deal.<\/p>\n

The 2015 deal was brokered by then-Secretary of State John Kerry, who now serves as Biden\u2019s global warming envoy.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
