\u201cWhat the f \u2013 \u2013 k am I doing here?\u201d Anthony Bourdain\u2019s unmistakable voice comes in over the rousing opening credit montage of the new documentary \u201cRoadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,\u201d<\/a> in theaters Friday. \u201cOne minute I was standing next to a deep fryer. The next I was watching the sun set over the Sahara.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a jarring moment. Just over three years after Bourdain was found dead by suicide<\/a> at age 61 in a France hotel room by his good friend Eric Ripert, he is returned to us in voiceover. Although now we know he is a uniquely unreliable narrator.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s a little preemptive truth-telling,\u201d Bourdain\u2019s eerie narration continues. \u201cThere\u2019s no happ<\/a>y ending.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s director, Morgan Neville (\u201c20 Feet From Stardom,\u201d \u201cWon\u2019t You Be My Neighbor?\u201d), eschews Bourdain\u2019s early life and starts in 1999, just before the publication of his groundbreaking best seller \u201cKitchen Confidential.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The chef-turned-author\u2019s rise to fame is portrayed as both meteoric and, ultimately, deeply alienating<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt happened overnight,\u201d Bourdain says in the film. \u201cOne minute I was a cook at a restaurant, and not a particularly great one \u2026 and the next, I was an author.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the book climbed the charts and Bourdain made the talk-show rounds, he greeted his growing notoriety with reticence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s scary,\u201d he says in another piece of archival footage. \u201cAnything that happens beyond that [kitchen] door, I\u2019m suspicious of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cParts Unknown\u201d producers Lydia Tenaglia and Christopher Collins first worked with Bourdain on an early travel<\/a> show shortly after the book came out. They remember him initially being extremely awkward in front of the camera on a trip to Japan and Vietnam.<\/p>\n

\u201cTony was actually a very shy human being,\u201d Collins says in the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2005, Bourdain divorced his first wife, high school sweetheart Nancy Putkoski. Ripert introduced him to restaurant manager Ottavia Busia not long after, and the two married and welcomed a daughter, Ariane, in 2007.<\/p>\n

He was thrilled to be a father and initially seemed to revel in having a quieter life as a family man, but the road beckoned and in New York, he was stopped by fans every two minutes on the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cTony got really famous,\u201d David Chang laments in the film, and he and Bourdain are shown commiserating about feeling isolated and distant from old friends. \u201cIt was just an incessant, non-stop barrage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other friends and colleagues recall Bourdain saying he was becoming agoraphobic and his life was getting \u201csmaller and smaller\u201d because he couldn\u2019t be out in public. <\/p>\n

His marriage to Busia unraveled<\/a> amid his near-constant travel and they split amicably in 2016, though their divorce was never finalized<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shortly after, he met Italian film actress\/director Asia Argento<\/a> while filming \u201cParts Unknown\u201d in Rome. He quickly developed a teenage-like infatuation with Argento, with friends in the film likening it to an addiction and noting that he referred to her as \u201cthe crazy Italian actress\u201d and said things would end \u201cvery, very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a very sort of manic nature to what was going on in that last year,\u201d Collins says. \u201cThe highs were very, very high, and the lows were very ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chang angrily and tearily recalls Bourdain telling him he would never be a good father.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was projecting,\u201d says Chang, now a doting parent to 2-year-old Hugo, with another baby on the way. \u201cIt broke his heart that he couldn\u2019t be the f\u2013king dad he thought he could be, the romantic version of dad.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

Bourdain let Argento direct \u201cParts Unknown\u201d in Hong Kong, after regular director Michael Steed fell ill. Veteran crew members bristled at her approach. Bourdain even fired his longtime Emmy-winning cinematographer Zach Zamboni after he clashed with Argento, who is not among those interviewed in the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt like at the end, I wasn\u2019t going to get closer to him by talking to her because she has her own very clear point of view about things,\u201d Neville has said<\/a>. \u201cShe says the same thing in every interview.\u201d (Argento has said<\/a> that she and Bourdain had an open relationship.) He\u2019s also noted<\/a> that he wanted the film to be about Bourdain, not just his relationship with Argento, although that shadows much of the final portion.<\/p>\n

Days before Bourdain\u2019s death, Argento was photographed with French reporter Hugo Cl\u00e9ment. In the doc, Steed recalls checking on Bourdain after the photos hit the papers, and the star mumbling \u201ca little f \u2013 \u2013 king discretion\u201d in reference to Argento being so public with her infidelity. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy take is that the thing that Tony was having the hardest time with was humiliation,\u201d Neville has said<\/a>. \u201cHe has taken himself so far out on the limb to be made to feel like a chump so publicly. That was the thing \u2014 not heartbreak. Humiliation.\u201d <\/p>\n

But, while Argento certainly doesn\u2019t come across well in the film, Neville is careful to stop short of blaming her outright for Bourdain\u2019s suicide. Others theorize that Bourdain never overcame the demons beneath the heroin problem of his youth. <\/p>\n

Artist and recovering addict Dave Choe notes that he\u2019d never met anyone else like Bourdain, who was supposedly able to quit heroin cold turkey. Bourdain had told him it was something he just worked at, something Choe initially believed before realizing he had simply traded vices.<\/p>\n

But, \u201cas I got to know him more, I realized it jumped,\u201d Choe says in the film. \u201cThe addiction jumped.\u201d <\/p>\n
