Don\u2019t bother passing the torch \u2014 he just grabbed it.<\/p>\n

Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams boldly proclaimed himself the city\u2019s new leader as outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio looked on helplessly at a private political gathering on Wednesday, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, I am the mayor,\u201d Adams said at the start of a speech during the Brooklyn Democratic Party\u2019s annual dinner.<\/p>\n

De Blasio stood behind Adams with a smile frozen on his face, a brief video clip obtained by The Post shows.<\/p>\n

But the lame duck app<\/a>eared uncomfortable as Adams continued speaking for several minutes at the Giando on the Water restaurant and event space in Williamsburg, a person who was there said.<\/p>\n

Adams never mentioned \u2014 or even looked at \u2014 the 6-foot-5 de Blasio, who reached over his likely successor\u2019s shoulder to grab the microphone when Adams finished his remarks and began walking away, the source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill de Blasio tried to hijack it as a moment to share the stage with Adams,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was awkward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another source said the habitually tardy mayor showed up late to the party, which was attended by Democratic bigwigs including state Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who represents Brooklyn and Queens, and US Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), representing Queens and Nassau County.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had to kind of finagle his way onto the stage,\u201d the source said of de Blasio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a little weird. Eric gave his speech, which people were more attentive to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, Adams was introduced by the Brooklyn Democratic Party\u2019s chairwoman, Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn (D-Brooklyn), who led the crowd in call-and-response chants of \u201cThe champ is here!\u201d as Adams beamed and made a thumbs-up gesture.<\/p>\n

Bichotte Hermelyn then handed off the mic to Adams, the outgoing Brooklyn borough president, and gave de Blasio a high five while appearing to laugh, the video clip shows.<\/p>\n

Adams\u2019 brash declaration came on the heels of his narrow primary victory last week and months ahead of both the Nov. 2 general election \u2014 in which he faces Republican Curtis Sliwa \u2014 and the Jan. 1 inauguration of the Big Apple\u2019s 110th mayor.<\/p>\n

But only hours earlier on Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Adams \u201cthe next mayor of the city of New York\u201d during a joint news<\/a> conference in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Cuomo said he was \u201cvery, very excited\u201d to work with Adams, saying they \u201cdeveloped a true mutual respect and friendship\u201d when Adams, a former NYPD captain, served in the state Senate.<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s comments came in marked contrast to his long-standing feud with de Blasio, whom Cuomo last month derided as a weak leader and incompetent manager.<\/p>\n

A de Blasio spokesman sarcastically said of Adams\u2019 \u201cI am the mayor\u201d comment, \u201cDamn. Now it\u2019s official, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone knows that you officially assume office if you declare you\u2019re the mayor within 10 feet of the current mayor,\u201d the spokesman added.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you think [late Mayor] Abe Beame got the job?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder-turned-radio talk show host, called Adams \u201cso pretentious, so omnipotent and so full of himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs he a dictator? Do we not have a democracy? Do we not have an election process? Need I remind him he has barely eked out a victory against Kathryn Garcia?\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd yet he\u2019s acting as if\u00a0he\u2019s leader\u00a0of New York City and all roads lead to the Eric Adams City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams campaign spokesman\u00a0Evan Thies said Adams\u2019 remark \u201cneeds context\u201d because Hermelyn\u00a0\u201chad just said he\u2019s the next mayor and he was speaking to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thies also claimed that Adams and de Blasio \u201chave a good working relationship.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
