From the Left: Hands Off Chick-fil-A<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assembly Democrats \u201care wrong to suggest that Chick-fil-A be essentially canceled, at least from public property in New York, for its political views and contributions,\u201d explain the editors of Albany\u2019s Times-Union<\/a>, and not just because the company \u201cmostly stopped giving to groups opposed to rights based on sexual orientation nearly a decade ago.\u201d More important, \u201cChick-fil-A has a First Amendment right to express its views and donate to organizations without government punishment. And choosing or excluding state vendors based on political views and contributions sets a dangerous precedent. What if future governors decide to forbid restaurants that give to their political opponents?\u201d And \u201cthose who oppose Chick-fil-A have a choice: They can eat somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Slandering Natural Law<\/strong><\/p>\n

Natural law is the theory that \u201call human beings, regardless of their race or any other characteristic, have inherent rights, which can be discovered and app<\/a>lied through reason,\u201d writes The Federalist\u2019s John Daniel Davidson<\/a> \u2014 so it\u2019s downright depressing that Yale University philosopher \u00adJason Stanley recently characterized it as \u201ca dog whistle to white, Christian nationalism.\u201d In fact, natural law, developed by Aristotle and later Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, \u201cis an antidote to racism and its various ideological offspring like white nationalism, not a cause of it. As Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas once said, \u2018those who deny natural law cannot get me out of slavery.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n

Tax take: Private-Equity Firms Pay Their Share<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last month, ProPublica charged that some execs never sell their investment shares and so don\u2019t pay taxes on them \u2014 yet that isn\u2019t typical in the private-equity industry, the American Investment Council\u2019s Steve Klinsky notes at RealClearPolitics<\/a>. For private-equity firms, the model is: \u201cbuy, build, sell and pay tax.\u201d These firms purchase or start companies, improve them and then resell them \u201cwithin a 10-year period,\u201d generating federal tax revenue. \u201cPE transactions make the federal cash register ring,\u201d and these days, it\u2019s ringing \u201ca lot\u201d: Taxable income \u201ccould be about $250 billion in the past six months alone.\u201d And the companies they hold employ 11.7 million people. So they aren\u2019t \u201ca form of tax avoidance,\u201d but of \u201cbusiness-value creation\u201d and \u201ctax-revenue creation\u201d of \u201cthe highest order.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Xi\u2019s Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf anybody had lingering doubts about the ruthlessness of the Chinese Communist Party, the speech President Xi Jinping delivered\u201d two weeks ago \u201cto mark the centenary of the party\u2019s founding should have removed them,\u201d declares Nigel Farage at Newsweek<\/a>. \u201cAt no point did he mention the misery and mass murder that Mao\u2019s Cultural Revolution inflicted. Instead, by way of tribute to his Communist dictator hero,\u201d he wore Mao-style clothes. Xi said \u201cthat anyone who dares to challenge China \u2018will have their heads bashed bloody against the Great Wall of Steel,\u2019 an aggressive threat one would associate with a criminal gang.\u201d He is \u201chell-bent on pursuing total economic and military supremacy over the West, whatever the cost.\u201d Yet even as he further suppresses human rights on the mainland and in Hong Kong, \u201cthe West says little and does nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: A Progressive Lie on Crime<\/strong><\/p>\n

To \u201cavoid responsibility\u201d for the crime wave hitting US cities, leftists have \u201ctaken to describing the problem as an issue of gun violence,\u201d notes Aron Ravin at National Review<\/a>. Even though \u201cthe data show that police killings are both infrequent and unrelated to racial bias,\u201d Democrats\u2019 radical anti-policing ideas \u201cmoved from the fringes toward the heart of progressive politics, crowding out common sense.\u201d But with public opposition to those policies mounting, Democrats now \u201ctout gun control, one of their main policy goals, as a solution to the crime surge their own policies helped create.\u201d In reality, \u201cfederal gun-control measures would do nothing to resolve the current problem.\u201d Many Americans already \u201csee the progressive narrative about guns and crime for the charade that it is,\u201d but let\u2019s hope more \u00ad\u201cbecome clear-eyed soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
