The Up<\/em> singer took to Twitter<\/strong> on Wednesday to call out a particular demographic for their alleged disrespectful behavior toward Black female artists on social media, and the internet isn\u2019t sure how it feels about it.<\/p>\n

The Grammy<\/strong> winner kicked off a series<\/a> of tweets by writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite twinks on this app<\/a> are weird. You don\u2019t dictate people\u2019s action.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hmm\u2026<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know, a \u201ctwink\u201d is slang for a type of gay male who is typically young, slim, and boyishly attractive. (Think Tom Daley <\/strong>circa 2016<\/a>.) While many supported the message or dismissed it as a joke, some people felt the comment was borderline homophobic.<\/p>\n

Critics wrote in the comments:<\/p>\n

\u201cidk what everyone has decided Twink means in 2021 but if it\u2019s still the same as 2010, I\u2019m out because slurs and general<\/a>izations are not it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCardi you shouldn\u2019t use the word twink like that. It\u2019s becoming another gay slur against all gay men. Not just white ones. White men white gay men sure whatever but don\u2019t say twink pls. Love u sm just want to let u know\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201ctwink is not a slur ofc but I\u2019m not going to sit here and pretend that it\u2019s not being used in a\u2026weird way lately. like some folks are getting too comfortable\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReplacing the F-slur in a tweet doesn\u2019t make the tweet less homophobic\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Others, meanwhile, took her side, writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are people in the comments pretending Twink or White are slurs?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cyou shouldn\u2019t even care what other people think. you be you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cyou\u2019re right, and you should say it\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Never one to shy away from controversy, the mother-of-one doubled down on her words in a follow-up tweet, explaining that these types of gay men say \u201cdisrespectful s**t about women\u201d and \u201cstart wars\u201d between fandoms. She explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cI said what I said and I\u2019m not taking it back!!! Ya love to hide behind black female artist pictures on your avi and be the ones saying the most disrespectful s**t about women & dictating their moves and start wars between female artist fans ALWAYS!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, she ended the rant on a positive note, telling fans:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow let\u2019s be nice shall we? Let\u2019s experience greatness and gagging sessions in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This isn\u2019t the first questionable controversy Cardi\u2019s had with the gay community. Back in 2018, the artist got heat for defending her then-fianc\u00e9 Offset<\/strong> after the Migos<\/strong> rapper came under fire for rapping \u201cI cannot vibe with queers\u201d in a song.<\/p>\n

Offset later confused listeners by suggesting he meant the dictionary definition of the word \u2014 \u201clingo that means strange or odd\u201d or \u201clame people who film you, post it and stalk you\u201d \u2014 before Cardi claimed she had \u201cnever even heard [of] that word\u201d before, telling fans in a Periscope<\/strong> livestream:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s a word that you guys said is a bad word for gays, I\u2019ve never even heard that word in the first place\u2026 Why don\u2019t y\u2019all educate people? A lot of people are not aware about what\u2019s wrong or right in the LGBT community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Well, it\u2019s good to know Cardi\u2019s been brushing up on her gay vocabulary, because she went from never having heard the word\u00a0queer<\/em> to using\u00a0twink<\/em> in just a couple short years. Unfortunately, however, she\u2019s not using it in the most progressive way.<\/p>\n
