(Photo by David Livingston\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_talks_Home_Before_Dark_and_more_in_our_exclusive_interview\"><\/span>Dara Resnik talks Home Before Dark and more in our exclusive interview<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When <em>Home Before Dark<\/em> premiered earlier this year on Apple TV Plus, just a couple of weeks into the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire \u201cmarketing plan that involved billboards in Times Square and on Melrose Avenue\u201d had to be scrapped, recounts <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> co-creator Dara Resnik. But the otherwise terrible timing might have helped the series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were stuck at home, and they wanted stuff to watch that they could feel good about and also be entertained by,\u201d she recalls. Enter <em>Home Before Dark<\/em>, a series about a young journalist who helps to solve a small town\u2019s longest-running mystery.<\/p>\n<p>In our exclusive interview, we discussed how Resnik nearly wasn\u2019t attached to the project and some of <em>Home Before Dark<\/em>\u2019s messaging and political implications. We also touched on her thoughts on why some viewers just won\u2019t let recently-resurfaced <em>Castle<\/em> controversy die and what\u2019s next for the writer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exclusive_Dara_Resnik_on_how_she_almost_wasnt_a_part_of_Home_Before_Dark\"><\/span>Exclusive: Dara Resnik on how she almost wasn\u2019t a part of Home Before Dark<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It started with a glass of wine between friends: \u201cI was on <em>I Love Dick<\/em>\u2014a fun show to say out loud, and it never got old\u2014and I got a call from a friend of mine. She said she\u2019d just landed the rights to this young journalist\u2019s life story, and would I be interested in collaborating with her and her old friend, Dana Fox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Home Before Dark<\/em> was sold to Paramount, which posed a problem for Resnik. \u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if I was going to be able to stay attached because I got <em>Daredevil<\/em>, and the person who was running Paramount at the time was not going to let me do <em>Daredevil<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Daredevil<\/em> was a better financial decision for the single mother, so that seemed to be the end of\u00a0<em>Home Before Dark<\/em> and Resnik. It was also exciting to work: \u201cShooting action set pieces on the streets you grew up on is an experience I highly recommend for anyone who could possibly have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Paramount came back with good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>: Dara Resnik could work on both series at the same time after all: \u201cSo, I would be working on Daredevil, and then in my \u2018free time,\u2019 I\u2019d be plugging away on this pilot with Dana and Joy\u2026I was still having so much fun in the Marvel universe, but that was right around when I was starting to get an inkling that Marvel was not going to be the same Marvel because Disney Plus was coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s how Dara Resnik rededicated herself as one of the <em>Home Before Dark<\/em> co-creators.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_284661\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Streaming\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/fetch\/c_fill,g_auto,f_auto,h_389,w_590\/https:\/\/hiddenremote.com\/files\/image-exchange\/2016\/04\/ie_44456-850x560.jpeg\" width=\"590\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Deric McCabe, Brooklynn Prince and Jibrail Nantambu in \u201cHome Before Dark,\u201d now streaming on Apple TV .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_on_how_Home_Before_Dark_compares_to_real-life_Hildes_story\"><\/span>Dara Resnik on how Home Before Dark compares to real-life Hilde\u2019s story<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hilde Lysiak is a real journalist, who has been seeking the truth from a very young age. \u201cShe was into covering homicides since she was four or five years old\u2014that\u2019s totally real. That makes it sound like she\u2019s a sociopath, but she\u2019s not. She\u2019s a really incredible, emotional person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did she get her start? Resnik explains: \u201cHer dad was a <em>New York Daily News<\/em> reporter. He covered every homicide in Brooklyn and The Bronx you can think of and was starting to get disillusioned. Then, he covered Trayvon Martin and Newtown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around this time, Matthew Lysiak moved his entire family to his hometown. \u201cHe could barely get out of bed, couldn\u2019t write. He was supposed to be writing a book about Newtown; but he couldn\u2019t write it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jsONbsXCuSg?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Just like her fictional counterpart, Hilde Lysiak \u201dscooped every paper\u201d on a neighborhood murder. \u201cThe story went viral, and people wrote all this stuff into her about how little girls should be having tea parties and playing with dolls. She read the comments out loud on camera; then, <em>that<\/em> went viral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did the creators land on the series\u2019s particular mystery? Real-life events were off-limits: \u201cIt felt very wrong to us to make a story point out of Newtown or Trayvon Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea for the mystery in <em>Home Before Dark<\/em> came from Dana Fox, who suggested the idea of a kidnapping. Co-creators Resnik and Joy Gorman Wettels collaborated on the idea of Matthew being present for his best friend\u2019s kidnapping.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_on_how_Castle_helped_with_this_project_and_Castles_controversy\"><\/span>Dara Resnik on how Castle helped with this project and Castle\u2019s controversy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Resnik found herself familiar territory on this series: \u201cMy time on <em>Castle<\/em> was a huge part of what made that attractive to me because I know how to break a mystery. <em>Castle<\/em> and <em>Pushing Daisies<\/em> both felt applicable to this in that they were both these weird, offbeat mysteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of <em>Castle<\/em>: The series was recently back in the news, years after the firing of Stana Katic and series cancellation. While viewers will probably never know what happened there\u2014and it\u2019s not anyone\u2019s business\u2014Resnik is appreciative of what she sees as the reason behind fans\u2019 inability to let the rumors die:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When I talk to folks from <em>Castle<\/em>, and I talk to them all the time, the thing that I say is that it\u2019s actually sort of lovely that it keeps coming up. It just means that people really loved the show. I think we should all aspire to be creating things that cause drama five years down the road. In this series, she explained, \u201cHilde\u2019s \u2018want\u2019 was to fix her family. She felt like if she could solve this mystery, she could fix her dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there was also some motivation for the writer:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In a lot of ways\u2014I don\u2019t know that I knew I was doing this at the time\u2014I think it became sort of a parable for my divorce. I had always been really honest with my kid about \u2018it\u2019s not your job to fix Mom. It\u2019s not your job to fix Dad.\u2019 I was always honest with her. That was something that I never saw enough of on television: parents being honest with their kids about the problems they\u2019re having.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She calls it \u201cone of the most gratifying things\u201d of interacting with viewers over <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> to see \u201chow many people related to the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_on_the_political_implications_and_messaging_of_Home_Before_Dark\"><\/span>Dara Resnik on the political implications and messaging of Home Before Dark<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_303821\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dara Resnik interview Home Before Dark\" height=\"2438\"  src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/fetch\/c_fill,g_auto,f_auto,h_2438,w_3200\/https:\/\/hiddenremote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/getty-images\/2018\/08\/1200570834.jpeg\"  width=\"3200\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Home Before Dark (Photo by David Livingston\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be lying if I said that I didn\u2019t have an agenda of some kind,\u201d the writer confessed when asked about the series\u2019s commentary on truth-seeking. When a Democratic Socialist newspaper reviewed <em>Home Before Dark<\/em>, she felt \u201cvery seen.\u201d The series \u201ctalks about white people leaving a person of color in prison for an unbelievably long amount of time. It talks about truth in journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joy Gorman Wettels brought Resnik the idea in 2017, in the aftermath of the 2016 election, and she thought to herself, \u201cthere\u2019s nothing more perfect for right now than the story of this little girl screaming into the wind that there is such a thing as news. And there is such a thing as a fact.\u201d She saw it as \u201cthe antidote\u201d to all the talk about alternative facts.<\/p>\n<p>But the extra layer of need in 2020 was not predictable: \u201cWhat we didn\u2019t know, of course, is that we\u2019d end up releasing the show in the middle of a pandemic where you couldn\u2019t believe anything coming out of the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And please stop asking who should watch.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>People kept asking, \u2018who\u2019s this show for,\u2019 which I thought was an incredibly gendered comment because no one ever asks who <em>E.T.<\/em>, <em>The Goonie<\/em>s, or <em>Stand By Me<\/em> is for. They\u2019re used to seeing the world through the lens of a little boy, and suddenly when it\u2019s a little girl, it\u2019s like: \u2018Ooh. Who is this for? This must just be for little girls.\u2019 No. It\u2019s for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_on_Apple_TV_Plus_programming_and_working_for_the_tech_giant\"><\/span>Dara Resnik on Apple TV Plus programming and working for the tech giant<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s followed Resnik knows she\u2019s a TV nerd. And she has some recommendations for you to stream on Apple TV Plus.<\/p>\n<p>She highly recommends <em>The Morning Show<\/em>, which \u201creally did some interesting, important things that no other show was doing.\u201d It also features \u201cthe best acting of Jennifer Aniston\u2019s career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What else should you watch? The content is good all around: \u201cMy daughter and I loved watching <em>Ghostwriter<\/em>.\u201d Other options include <em>Defending Jacob<\/em>, <em>Truth Be Told<\/em>, and <em>Visible<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, she believes, Apple TV Plus is releasing content that matters. \u201cMaybe they think it\u2019s good for the brand, but I don\u2019t really care what the reason is because they\u2019re globally, getting out to billions of people, messaging that is really important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dara_Resnik_talks_about_what_shes_working_on_at_the_time_of_publication\"><\/span>Dara Resnik talks about what she\u2019s working on at the time of publication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What\u2019s next for our friend Dara Resnik?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ve been running this writers\u2019 room that\u2019s sort of like a genre, horror-comedy. It\u2019s a social horror show called <em>The Horror of Dolores Roach<\/em>. It\u2019s based on a podcast that had Daphne Rubin-Vega, Bobby Cannavale, and all these awesome folks. It\u2019s sort of an update of the original Sweeney Todd tale from the 1800s.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s a definite twist on the Fleet Street barber\u2019s legend, though.<\/p>\n<p>This time, says Resnik:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s about a woman who took the the rap for her drug-dealer boyfriend and went to prison for 20 years. When she comes back, she goes home to Washington Heights, and it\u2019s totally gentrified. The only shop that\u2019s left is this empanada shop in the storefront of the building that she used to live in, run by Bobby Cannavale, who lets her live with him while she gets her life together. She starts giving massages for a living, and when one client goes too far, she ends up killing him. And Bobby Cannavale, running the empanada shop, is like, \u2018don\u2019t worry, baby.
