“#After Years of Speculation, A ‘Lost’ Reboot Might Be in the Works<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

We have to go back? Ten years after the Lost<\/em> castaways \u201cmoved on together\u201d in the emotional series<\/a> finale, the ABC drama may be pulling a John Locke and getting a second life.<\/p>\n

According to We Got This Covered<\/em> sources, discussions about a Lost<\/em> reboot are afoot. Nothing is final, the site cautions, but the prospective reboot would be \u201cmore mature\u201d and would likely crash-land on a streaming service.<\/p>\n

This report might seem like a baseless rumor, but the same sources previously teased that the Transformers<\/em> film franchise was getting rebooted and that Ahsoka Tano would be a part of The Mandalorian<\/em> Season 2, and in both cases, the scoop seems to have proven accurate.<\/p>\n

Talk of a Lost<\/em> reboot has circulated for years, though ABC is usually mentioned as the new version’s home. \u201cI think it\u2019s likely that at some point, ABC will want to reboot Lost <\/em>because it\u2019s a valuable franchise, and there will be some young, bright writer or writers who will come up with a great idea that the network responds to, and that\u2019ll be great,\u201d Lost<\/em> showrunner Carlton Cuse speculated in a 2014 Entertainment Weekly <\/em>interview.<\/p>\n

In 2017, showrunner Damon Lindelof told the magazine he hopes any Lost<\/em> reboot would focus on new characters. \u201cCarlton and I always said that we welcome any future crack at the [intellectual property]. Lost<\/em> was bigger than us and bigger than [co-creator] J.J. [Abrams]. There\u2019s something really exciting about the fact that George Lucas sold the Star Wars universe and now the people who grew up watching it are making it. Maybe the same thing could be said for Lost<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

A year later, then-ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey revealed to TVLine<\/em> that the network hadn\u2019t had any \u201cofficial discussions\u201d about rebooting Lost<\/em> but that the idea is \u201con a list of ‘wouldn\u2019t that be great if\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Dungey left her ABC post in late 2018, and her successor, Karey Burke, enthused about a Lost<\/em> update just months later. \u201cYes, I would like that very much,\u201d Burke said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in February 2019. \u201cThat is a reboot I would be interested in seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, we covered the widespread backlash to the prospect. \u201cYou can\u2019t recreate the hype around Lost<\/em>, at least not around a reboot of the series,\u201d wrote The Mary Sue<\/em>\u2019s Kate Gardner. \u201cThat phenomenon usually occurs around a new show that captures the zeitgeist in a fresh, unique way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jean Higgins, who was an executive producer on the show, agrees. \u201cI don\u2019t know if you could do it again,\u201d she told Observer<\/em> this May. \u201cIt\u2019s lightning in a bottle \u2026 Leave it alone. Let it be what it was. It was fabulous, it was wonderful. It was, I think, life-changing for a number of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

And much like her character, Kate Austen, actress Evangeline Lilly doesn\u2019t want to return to the island. \u201cFor the most part, I don\u2019t usually love [reboots],\u201d she told EW<\/em> in 2018. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s just tainting something that\u2019s precious. I\u2019ve said I don\u2019t want to do things in the past and I\u2019ve done them\u2014you know, never say never\u2014but sitting where I am today, my assumption is no.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Lost<\/em> reboot could<\/em> serve as a worthy successor to the Emmy-winning series. The most recent Star Trek<\/em> film series, another entry on J.J. Abrams\u2019 filmography, cleverly introduced an alternate timeline to both pay homage to, and free itself from, the Star Trek<\/em> canon. An innovative storyteller might be able to do the same for Lost<\/em>, but it\u2019d be a tall order.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s any consolation for puristic Losties, at least it\u2019s a reboot<\/em> that\u2019s reportedly in the discussions stage, not a revival<\/em>. The original Lost<\/em> was divisive, but for all of its perceived flaws, it told a complete story, ending with the very finite \u201cThe End.\u201d A successor would have to forge into new territory instead of retreading the past and trying to redo the original mysteries.
