The new Anthony Bourdain documentary features a range of voices weighing on the all-star chef\u2019s life \u2014 including a computerized version of Bourdain himself. <\/p>\n

Director Morgan Neville deployed A.I. technology<\/a> to create a voice-over reading of an email the late chef had written in \u201cRoadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,\u201d according to an interview with The New Yorker<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Neville pored over hundreds of hours of footage of Bourdain to stitch together voice-overs for the film, which hits theaters Friday, he told the outlet.<\/p>\n

When he couldn\u2019t find an existing narration to match an email he wanted read in the film, he made it up, according to the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were three quotes there I wanted his voice for that there were no recordings of,\u201d Neville reportedly said. \u201cI created an A.I. model of his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you watch the film\u2026 you probably don\u2019t know what the other lines are that were spoken by the AI, and you\u2019re not going to know,\u201d he told the magazine. \u201cWe can have a documentary-ethics panel about it later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics took to social media<\/a> to lambast the filmmaker\u2019s tactic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I wrote my review I was not aware that the filmmakers had used an A.I. to deepfake Bourdain\u2019s voice for portions of the narration. I feel like this tells you all you need to know about the ethics of the people behind this project,\u201d Sean Burns, a critic for Boston\u2019s WBUR tweeted Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy only real thought about the Anthony Bourdain AI voice thing is that I\u2019m probably not qualified to meaningfully comment on it, but Anthony Bourdain almost definitely would\u2019ve HATED it,\u201d one user wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n
