“#A New Legacy’ is an abomination: review<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

During the endless final sequence of \u201cSpace Jam: A New Legacy,\u201d Porky Pig calls himself \u201cthe Notorious P.I.G.\u201d and begins to rap. \u201cThis pig is lit,\u201d the Looney Tune says. \u201cI\u2019m super legit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porky should\u2019ve added: \u201cAnd my movie is s\u2013t.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the pantheon of misguided sequels and reboots, \u201cA New Legacy\u201d is right up there with \u201cPaul Blart: Mall Cop 2\u201d and \u201cLittle Fockers.\u201d The original 1996 \u201cSpace Jam\u201d wasn\u2019t top-drawer either, but it made a buck at the box office. So, money-grubbing Warner Bros. took 25 years to crank out a follow-up that\u2019s far, far worse. And they know it.<\/p>\n

Over its interminable, nearly two-hour runtime, the film repeatedly mocks its very existence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a ballplayer,\u201d says star LeBron James, taking the reins from the original\u2019s Michael Jordan, during a pitch meeting with WB execs. \u201cAnd athletes acting \u2014 it never goes well.\u201d That\u2019s especially true of cardboard James.<\/p>\n

The villain of the movie is the WB algorithm, called, ugh, Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle), who is responsible for drumming up all of the studio\u2019s soulless content, such as \u2026 this!<\/p>\n

When LeBron arrives in Tune World, where all the Looney Tunes are supposed to live, he finds it largely abandoned. Bugs Bunny tells the Laker his animated pals left home for more app<\/a>ealing properties: Harry Potter, DC Comics, Game<\/a> of Thrones, etc. That\u2019s also what viewers have done: Today\u2019s kids are much too busy monetizing their TikToks to watch a cartoon about a hunter with a speech impediment.<\/p>\n

The plot, such as it is, is much the same as the \u201996 movie, except the alien foe has been changed to a computer. The technology<\/a> infusion robs the film of fun. Al zaps LeBron and his video-game-obsessed son Dom (who is not actually his child, but actor Cedric Joe) into \u201cthe Serververse\u201d and challenges him to a basketball game against the menacing Goon Squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If LeBron wins, the pair gets to go home. If he loses, he\u2019s trapped for all eternity \u2014 a feeling I was all too familiar with.<\/p>\n

While LeBron recruits his scrappy team, Warner Bros. makes us watch a long HBO Max ad. Mad Max, Austin Powers, Rick and Morty, Batman, Harry Potter, \u201cCasablanca\u201d and more flash across the screen in a montage, as if to brag about the studio\u2019s extensive catalog. It\u2019s one of director Malcolm D. Lee\u2019s many strategies to avoid developing characters or having funny scenes. Eventually, LeBron settles on Bugs, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fud, Lola Bunny & Co. to help him win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All along, the movie blares its obnoxious \u201cBe yourself!\u201d message like a foghorn. At the start, LeBron aggressively pushes Dom to become a ballplayer like him and forces the teen to practice for hours on end. \u201cYou can\u2019t be great without putting in the work!\u201d he says. But Dom only wants to design video games in his bedroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can probably guess that when the two are sucked into a computer, LeBron suddenly develops a newfound appreciation for his son\u2019s coding abilities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some of the first film\u2019s problems can be forgiven by its sheer camp value and because it was a real cultural event. Getting Michael Jordan, the most famous athlete in the world, into a movie was a huge deal. And the film\u2019s soundtrack, whose big song \u201cI Believe I Can Fly\u201d was regrettably performed by R. Kelly<\/a>, went six-times platinum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This film, however, is nothing more than forgettable nostalgia bait.<\/p>\n

Like they do with most reboots, audiences are gonna stick with \u201cSpace Jam\u2019s\u201d old legacy.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
