“#Cecily Strong & Keegan-Michael Key Preview Their Onscreen Bond<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

App<\/a>le TV+\u2019s Schmigadoon!<\/em> poses a unique question asking how an everyday couple might react if they were magically transported to a quaint town that functions like a 1940s musical. The answer is\u2026 not normal.<\/p>\n

The lucky guinea pigs in this scenario are Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key), a city-dwelling duo who takes to nature in order to find a spark that has since disappeared in their relationship. During a rainy hike, they find refuge in the titular town that has more than a single song in its bold beating heart.<\/p>\n

Getting a little more than they bargained for, Melissa and Josh attempt to skedaddle before they\u2019re swept up in the catchy performances, but a stronger connection must be made in order to escape Schmigadoon\u2019s clutches. So, how does one come up with such a concept, co-creator Cinco Paul reveals it was 25 years in the making after a viewing of the film An American Werewolf in London<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, this opening is just like [1954\u2019s] Brigadoon<\/em>.\u2019 And then somehow it got me thinking, what if two modern guys ended up in a musical and were stuck there? And then I just put it on the shelf for all this time,\u201d shares Paul.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until he met Andrew Singer at Lorne Michaels\u2018 Broadway Video that he finally pulled the idea off of the shelf. \u201cI thought, \u2018Huh, I wonder if that idea might work.\u2019 But then I said, \u2018It should be to a couple instead of two friends. And they\u2019re stuck there until they find true love.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong and Key were equally eager to get involved with the musical project which also features a sizable cast made up of Broadway bigwigs including Aaron Tveit, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana DeBose, Jane Krakowski, Alan Cumming, and Ann Harada to name a few.<\/p>\n

The series<\/a> was \u201ccertainly more musical than I\u2019m used to,\u201d Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u2018s Strong admits, \u201cbut I grew up doing theater, watching theater, loving theater, musicals, and plays.\u201d With a Broadway producer uncle in her own family, Strong was heavily exposed to the musical scene, making it an early love in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an easy yes for me to do this show,\u201d she continues. \u201cThese table reads were just so special and magical.\u201d The sentiment certainly aligns with Strong\u2019s character who is more taken with the musical town of Schmigadoon whereas Key\u2019s Josh isn\u2019t so thrilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that was so fun about Josh was that he\u2019s the opposite of me,\u201d Key remarks. \u201cI wanted that challenge of \u2018am I going to be able to do this show without tapping my feet at every number?\u2019 The answer is no. I failed miserably,\u201d laughs Key. \u201cThank God for the guidance of [Director Barry] Sonnenfeld\u201d who would remind the actor \u201c\u2018you can\u2019t smile, you\u2019ve got to give me a frown here.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh isn\u2019t smitten with the cheery veneer of Schmigadoon or its citizens. \u201cSchmigadoon! reflects how he is in real life,\u201d Key says of his character. \u201cHis thing is like, \u2018Everything\u2019s fine. Why can\u2019t we just live life right at this level?’\u201d And that\u2019s the kind of attitude that keeps Josh and Melissa stranded in this oddly dream-like world.<\/p>\n

Despite Melissa and Josh\u2019s relationship struggles, the bond between Strong and Key was instantaneous and a breeding ground for some otherworldly improvisation. \u201cIt was one of the easiest things I\u2019ve ever done. It\u2019s like we met and boom, right away, he\u2019s been my best friend my whole life, I\u2019ve known him forever, and let\u2019s go do this journey together,\u201d Strong recalls of connecting with Key. \u201cWe loved each other immedia<\/a>tely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were having so much fun together. It was really delightful to witness,\u201d Paul confirms, and it\u2019s just one of the many reasons to tune into this charming and hilarious series.<\/p>\n
