When news<\/a> broke of the Stanley Cup being dented, speculation immedia<\/a>tely started surrounding the nature of the damage. Many cited careless partying and drinking<\/a>, and even a potential encore of the Buccaneers\u2019 throwing their championship trophy, as possible culprits.<\/p>\n

Well, it app<\/a>arently was something far less devious. The Cup was dented by Lightning forward Pat Maroon, who accidentally fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was obviously raining and it was wet,\u201d\u00a0Maroon told the Tampa Bay Times<\/a>. \u201cI went to lift it, and I went backwards with it. I slipped and [Cup keeper] Phil [Pritchard] helped me up and the Cup went back on its end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maroon is quite familiar with the Stanley Cup. The 33-year-old is the fourth player in NHL history to win three consecutive titles with two different franchises \u2013 he won in 2019 with the Blues and the past two years with the Lightning. And he wants fans to know there was no disrespect intended.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are saying we disrespected the Cup. That is such BS because if they had half a brain, you know it\u2019s wet outside and you\u2019d think we\u2019d be throwing the Cup around? No,\u201d Maroon said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t disrespect it. It was a complete accident, and we both got hurt. My back has been hurt all day. So, that\u2019s what happened. Nothing crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Stanley Cup was sent back to Montreal \u2013 the Lightning coincidentally defeated the Canadiens in five game<\/a>s to secure their second consecutive championship \u2013\u00a0and has since been returned looking as good as new.<\/p>\n

The damaged Cup was not the original bowl \u2013 which was retired in 1970 \u2013\u00a0and rests in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The dented Cup is the \u201cPresentation Cup\u201d with the \u201cReplica Cup\u201d ready in Toronto if the travel<\/a>ing one\u00a0is rendered irreparable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure there\u2019s way worse things that have happened to the Cup besides me falling,\u201d Maroon said. \u201cThey said it\u2019s an easy fix. It wasn\u2019t even that bad. The picture made it look like it was dented that bad. It wasn\u2019t.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
