\n Don\u2019t all deceased congressman look alike?<\/p>\n

In an excruciating gaffe, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted out a tribute to the late Rep. John Lewis Saturday \u2014 and paired it with a photo of himself with the late Rep. Elijah Cummings instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an honor to know & be blessed to serve in Congress with John Lewis a genuine & historic American hero,\u201d Rubio wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Elijah Cummings,\u201d responded Astead Herndon, a reporter at the New York Times.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, the post was removed \u2014 and the red-faced Republican offered his mea culpas.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarlier today I tweeted an incorrect photo,\u201d Rubio admitted\u2013 this time with a video of himself and Lewis at a Martin Luther King Day event in 2017. \u201cJohn Lewis was a genuine American hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis and Cummings, a Maryland congressman who died in 2019, were frequently confused for one another during the 12 terms they served together in the US House of Representatives. Both were bald, older African American men.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would laugh about it \u2013 and I took some joy in it, since he was taller and younger,\u201d Lewis wrote in a Time Magazine tribute to Cummings last year.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
