He was 57.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we announce, this evening, with his wife Tara by his side, Hip Hop pioneer Biz Markie peacefully passed away,\u201d Biz Markie\u2019s representative Jenni D. Izumi issued a statement. \u201cWe are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time. Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter. We respectfully request privacy for his family as they mourn their loved one.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ConsumerMarketingUnitThemedWrapper-kknrtm gZsZUO consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit__slot consumer-marketing-unit__slot--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"journey-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Born Marcel Theo Hall, Biz Markie was best known for his inimitable skills as a beatboxer and his 1989 hit \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9aofoBrFNdg\"}' href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9aofoBrFNdg\">Just a Friend<\/a>.\u201d The single from his second album <em>The Biz Never Sleeps<\/em> reached No. 9 on Billboard\u2019s Hot 100, and its humor gave the song an enduring popularity that stretched across the ensuing decades.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Container-ineSfH kZHRTY\"><\/div>\n<p>Markie rose in his native New York as a beatboxer for MC Shan, Roxane Shante, and others. He appeared in the 1986 Dutch documentary <em>Big Fun in the Big Town<\/em> alongside MC Shan, as well as Run-D.M.C., Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Grandmaster Flash, and other early pillars of the New York hip-hop community. He released his debut album <em>Goin\u2019 Off<\/em> in 1988, which featured \u201cNobody Beats the Biz.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"AdWrapper-fEXqQS krBdZf ad ad--in-content\">\n<div class=\"ad__slot ad__slot--in-content\" data-node-id=\"zenvt8\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 1991, a track from Markie\u2019s third album <em>I Need a Haircut<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/therecord\/2013\/05\/01\/180375856\/20-years-ago-biz-markie-got-the-last-laugh\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/therecord\/2013\/05\/01\/180375856\/20-years-ago-biz-markie-got-the-last-laugh\">prompted a legal case<\/a> that formally established the practice of sample clearance in hip-hop. Markie sampled Gilbert O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Fm4mcCjXW4k\"}' href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Fm4mcCjXW4k\">Alone Again (Naturally)<\/a>\u201d on his own song \u201cAlone Again.\u201d As a result, O\u2019Sullivan sued Markie and Warner Bros., and a federal judge in New York ruled that Markie\u2019s usage violated O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s copyright. Markie released his fourth album in 1993 and titled it <em>All Samples Cleared!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a Friend\u201d remained Markie\u2019s biggest hit, and, in the 1990s, he focused on working with the Beastie Boys over releasing more albums of his own. He appeared on their 1992 album <em>Check Your Head<\/em>, 1994\u2019s <em>Ill Communication<\/em>, and 1998\u2019s <em>Hello Nasty<\/em>. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Markie made frequent appearances on TV, often parodying himself and \u201cJust a Friend.\u201d In 2002\u2019s <em>Men in Black II<\/em>, he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lr7pyggTmmY\"}' href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lr7pyggTmmY\">appeared as an alien working in a post office<\/a>.
