The Los Angeles\u00a0County Sheriff\u2019s Department on Friday ripped the area\u2019s newly reinstated indoor mask mandate \u2014 saying the COVID-19 precaution is \u201cnot backed by science<\/a>\u201d and that the law enforcement agency won\u2019t enforce it. <\/p>\n

Sheriff Alex Villanueva\u00a0said\u00a0that his department was too underfunded to make sure residents comply with the public health order, which is set to go into effect Saturday amid an uptick in coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n

Requiring that people wear face coverings indoors, even when vaccinated, is \u201cnot backed by science\u201d and \u201ccontradicts\u201d federal health guidelines, Villanueva said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) has authority to enforce the order, but the underfunded\/defunded Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department will not expend our limited resources and instead ask for voluntary compliance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encourage the DPH to work collaboratively with the Board of Supervisors and law enforcement to establish mandates that are both achievable and supported by science.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mandate \u2014 which app<\/a>lies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people in shops, gyms and retail stores, as well as restaurants when not eating or drinking \u2014 takes effect just before midnight on Saturday. <\/p>\n

Local health officials said Thursday that the county has been recording more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases each day for a week, and there is now \u201csubstantial community transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n

The county\u2019s supervisor on Friday evening said she was concerned by the spike in cases, but expressed ambivalence about the new guidance, noting that it was not in line with the rest of California.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am concerned by rising cases, but I don\u2019t believe the mask mandate will help efforts to stress vaccine efficacy and compel unvaccinated residents to get vaccinated,\u201d Supervisor Kathryn Barger tweeted Friday<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cLA County should remain aligned with the State instead of creating confusion and disagreement at the local level.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
