The Aussie authorities have gotten themselves into an extremely hairy situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a bizarre bureaucratic bungle being celebrated in the furry community, the Australian government accidentally commissioned fursonas<\/em> for its Olympic mascots. The fuzzy figures have already been printed onto a variety of Olympics promotional merch, including coins, booklets and comics.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the Olympics are soon, how is your country trying to drum up national pride? Well here in Australia, supermarket chain Woolworths (Woolies) is having a collectable sticker series<\/a> for kids to collect of our athletes with \ud835\ude64\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude69\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5c\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude68\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude6e \ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude6a\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude6e \ud835\ude62\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude68\ud835\ude58\ud835\ude64\ud835\ude69\ud835\ude68?!\u201d one wide-eyed tweeter noted<\/a>, along with photos of the collectibles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The artist who created the characters reportedly even responded<\/a> to explain how the government\u2019s app<\/a>arent bizarre endorsement of the sexualized, anthropomorphic animal community came to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cG\u2019day! That\u2019s my art and my (re)designs. Had no idea they\u2019d finally gone into use LMAO. Happy to field any questions. Rest assured the people employing me had no idea what furries were. But I did,\u201d commented the 2D artist<\/a> behind the campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On their own profile, they offered further insight into how the situation came to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201chey fellow aussies, the fursonas I was commissioned to draw by the government are now on sale in booklet form for $3 at woolies,\u201d they wrote on Wednesday<\/a>. \u201cI am no longer jazzed for the olympics theyre attached to due to the global plague we\u2019re all living through but what can you do. Send tweet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

That the government moved ahead with printing the artist\u2019s comics on the merch came as a surprise. \u201cWHAT THE HELL. DID I GET AN EMAIL (scrolls) nope,\u201d the artist wrote in a follow-up tweet.<\/p>\n

An Australian Mint spokesperson said in a statement that they\u2019d intended for the mascots to be manga<\/a>-style, in tribute to Japan being the host country, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A spokesperson from Australian supermarket chain Woolworths, a key Olympics sponsor, said that while the Mint may not have fully realized what their commission looked like, it was a hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve already received positive customer feedback, including from customers who are excited by the representation in the Olympic and Paralympic game<\/a>s and the Aussie Heroes collection,\u201d Woolworths said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mint added that over 90 percent of the coin collection sold within three days of becoming available.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
