“#Braves\u2019 Freddie Freeman relives scary coronavirus journey<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n ATLANTA \u2014 Freddie Freeman doesn\u2019t know if he has time to be ready for the Atlanta Braves\u2019 opener.<\/p>\n

Following a scary journey in his battle with COVID-19, Freeman is grateful to even have a chance.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the four-time All-Star revealed he had a high temperature of 104.5 degrees early in his battle with the disease and prayed for his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said a little prayer that night,\u201d Freeman said in a video conference call. \u201cI\u2019ve never been that hot before. My body was really, really hot. \u2026 I said \u2018Please don\u2019t take me\u2019 because I wasn\u2019t ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman said the fever was down to 101 the following morning and broke two days later. He said Saturday was his ninth consecutive day without symptoms, which also included body aches, chills and a temporary loss of his senses of taste and smell. He said two other members of his household, his wife and aunt, are recovering after positive tests.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel great,\u201d he said. \u201cI only lost one pound. \u2026 I didn\u2019t lose any strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman reported to Truist Park for a workout on Friday only about an hour after receiving his second negative test for the coronavirus, which earned him medical clearance to play. <\/p>\n

The Braves plan to give Freeman as many at-bats as possible before the season. He had a run-scoring trip<\/a>le over the head of right fielder Ronald Acu\u00f1a Jr. in Saturday night\u2019s intrasquad game<\/a> and also caught a foul popup over his shoulder.<\/p>\n

Freeman\u2019s app<\/a>reciation of being back with the team was obvious. The Braves posted video on the team\u2019s Twitter<\/a> account of Freeman, carrying his bat and glove, saying \u201cThis is wonderful\u201d as he walked out of the dugout and looked out at the field on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I\u2019m a kid in a candy store again,\u201d he said Saturday. \u201cYou forget sometimes how much you love this game. I did truly miss it. I was so excited when I got to the yard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Braves are thrilled Freeman is back.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously when you get your best player back it\u2019s a positive thing and a good thing,\u201d manager Brian Snitker said. \u201cI\u2019m excited for him and us, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman set career highs with 38 home runs and 121 RBIs last season to help Atlanta win its second straight NL East title. He placed fourth in the MVP voting in 2018.<\/p>\n

Freeman\u2019s return was well timed. Free agent outfielder Yasiel Puig tested positive for the coronavirus after agreeing to sign with Atlanta. The positive test voided the deal.<\/p>\n

Puig had been seen as a replacement for Nick Markakis, who opted out for the seaso n after talking on the telephone with Freeman.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately that was my worst day,\u201d Freeman said, adding he didn\u2019t try to influence the decision by Markakis when the two spoke again days later.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just wasn\u2019t into it and I totally, totally get it,\u201d Freeman said.<\/p>\n

Asked what he\u2019s looking to see from Freeman, Snitker said, \u201cI don\u2019t think I have to look for anything. If he\u2019s out there he\u2019s going to be ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman said his legs were sore on Saturday after his workout on Friday. The Braves open the season next Friday at the New York Mets.<\/p>\n

Freeman was one of four teammates to test positive at the start of summer camp. Right-hander Touki Toussaint, who had no symptoms, also returned Friday. Left-handed reliever Will Smith and infielder Pete Kozma have not returned.<\/p>\n

Freeman wore a facemask during a video interview and said he\u2019ll continue to take precautions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very serious,\u201d he said, adding that his family \u201cdid everything right\u201d to avoid the disease. \u201cIt still somehow got to me.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
