{"id":301709,"date":"2021-07-17T19:52:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-17T16:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/uft-offering-teachers-25-per-hour-to-sell-in-person-schooling\/"},"modified":"2021-07-17T19:52:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T16:52:58","slug":"uft-offering-teachers-25-per-hour-to-sell-in-person-schooling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/uft-offering-teachers-25-per-hour-to-sell-in-person-schooling\/","title":{"rendered":"#UFT offering teachers $25 per hour to sell in-person schooling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#UFT offering teachers $25 per hour to sell in-person schooling<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As enrollment in city public schools plummets, the teachers\u2019 union is offering members cold hard cash to coax students back this fall.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent email to members, the United Federation of Teachers offered to pay $25 per hour to make house visits \u201cto encourage a return to in-person learning for all students during the 2021-2022 school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Bill de Blasio announced back in May that schools would reopen this fall \u2014 without a remote option.<\/p>\n<p>But, as The Post has exclusively reported, enrollment in city schools nosedived through the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 25, the last day of school, the daily \u201cregister\u201d showed enrollment of just 887,612 in 1,584 schools, according to internal Department of Education records reviewed by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s down from 1.03 million in the 2019-2020 academic year. Fewer students means fewer dues-paying teachers are needed. <\/p>\n<p>The program entails 10 four-hour shifts, plus a one-day training session where \u201clunch will be provided,\u201d according to the email.<\/p>\n<p>Members must be \u201ccomfortable with having face to face, one-to-one, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly distanced conversations with parents and community members at their homes,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you want to pay me with my own dues, to go to random peoples\u2019 homes, to sell in-person schooling in the Bronx?\u201d one city teacher griped to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand how UFT can even pay us,\u201d the teacher said. \u201cCentral [DOE] should be paying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A UFT rep told The Post: \u201cThere is no substitute for in-person instruction. NYC educators want their students physically in front of them this fall. They know parents have questions and so this is just one way educators are reaching out to families to address their concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rep added that the union compiled a list of \u201clikely parents\u201d from voter-registration information, which is public.<\/p>\n<p>Demott Myrie \u2014 a member of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morecaucusnyc.org\/\">Movement of Rank and File Educators<\/a>, a progressive caucus of the UFT \u2014 told The Post, \u201cI\u2019m totally against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Myrie said it was imprudent to promote house visits, as COVID-19 cases rise with the spread of the new Delta variant. Myrie\u2019s group has resisted the return to in-person schooling, citing COVID-19 risks.<\/p>\n<p>Myrie \u2014 who in 2019 unsuccessfully <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morecaucusnyc.org\/2019\/02\/20\/candidate-statement-dermott-myrie-more-nominee-for-uft-president\/\">challenged<\/a> UFT President Michael Mulgrew \u2014 suggested the side-gig could be a perk for friends of union leadership.
