“#Mets\u2019 Pete Alonso brings \u2018relentless attitude\u2019 in first game<\/a> back<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n It took longer than most people expected, but baseball was back in New York on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

And though it was an exhibition game with no fans at Citi Field, that was fine with Pete Alonso.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the days we were wishing and waiting for during the second offseason,\u2019\u2019 Alonso said before going 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 9-3 loss to the Yankees in the first exhibition game for both teams.<\/p>\n

And though Alonso won\u2019t be setting any single-season home run records this year, thanks to a 60-game schedule, he still has some lofty goals with Opening Day less than a week away.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, I want to app<\/a>roach every single day with a relentless attitude,\u2019\u2019 Alonso said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be as productive as I possibly can [be]. Whether it\u2019s coming up clutch, a play on defense, a homer, there are a lot of different ways I can help my team win a ballgame.\u201d<\/p>\n

But his eyes remain on a bigger prize, one that \u2014 for all his success during his spectacular rookie season a year ago \u2014 Alonso has yet to reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, I ultimately want to help my team get to the postseason and win a championship,\u2019\u2019 Alonso said. \u201cThis year, we have an amazing team. We have an incredible pitching staff and a dynamic lineup. We just want to be able capture this opportunity and take advantage of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll have to do so, though, without fans at Citi Field for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

And few players in recent history have been embraced as quickly \u2014 and been as quick to return the embrace \u2014 of New York as Alonso was in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying with no fan isn\u2019t anything unusual \u2026 for ballplayers because we had to go through the minor leagues and certain leagues didn\u2019t draw as well as others,\u2019\u2019 Alonso said. \u201cEspecially on a Tuesday or Wednesday night in the middle of summer, when it\u2019s probably 105 degrees, there\u2019s not very many people going to those games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonso said he would \u201cmiss playing in front of the fans,\u2019\u2019 but added, \u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s what\u2019s between the lines and playing against the other team out there. For me, I know all the fans are watching. I love those elevated and incredible, intense moments, but I know those moments are still gonna happen because they are created within the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s just happy to be back on the field following the sport\u2019s shutdown in March due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this quarantine or second offseason, it was kind of, \u2018Hopes up high, heads down low,\u2019\u200a\u201d Alonso said. \u201cYou hope and want and dream in order to get back, but you have to take one day at a time. There was a lot of unknown. We didn\u2019t necessarily know how the future would unfold or what would happen, but we\u2019re so happy to be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also planning on building on what he did as a rookie, when he continued his practice of making notes daily in a marble composition notebook to become a better hitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to test out what I\u2019m working on: being disciplined in the strike zone, elevate my game defensively and just being a better baseball player,\u2019\u2019 said Alonso, who made a nice scoop at first in the third inning.<\/p>\n

And while the notebook might be different, Alonso doesn\u2019t intend to change much.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt may not be a marble notebook, but I\u2019ve still got a notebook,\u2019\u2019 Alonso said. \u201cInstead of \u20182019,\u2019 it\u2019s labeled \u20182020.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n
