“#Florida condo collapse victims targeted by identity thieves stealing money<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

First they were victims of the condominium collapse in South Florida. Now, they\u2019re victims of identity theft.<\/p>\n

Several of the people who died in the June 24 collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside have been targeted by thieves who have ransacked bank accounts and opened credit cards in their names.<\/p>\n

The account of Gladys and Antonio Lozano, married nearly 59 years and found in their bed together, was compromised by a hacker the day of their funeral, their son Sergio Lozano told WSVN News<\/a>. The crooks filled out a change of address form and created online banking for his parents\u2019 account, then withdrew money via Zelle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find it totally devastating, after losing my parents, that I have to deal with all the estate issues, and now I\u2019m having to deal with somebody stealing from my parents,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter they\u2019re dead and buried, they\u2019re stealing from them?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just wrong, just wrong,\u201d said Lozano. \u201cHow many people have perished in that building, and how many people have had their money stolen while they\u2019re dead in the rubble, which is not right? You should get arrested, and you should go to jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miami-Dade Police are investigating this and several other cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the revictimization of the victims that we\u2019re sort of starting to experience right now with these hackers,\u201d Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told NBC\u2019s Miami affiliate<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve seen the names in the paper, they\u2019re going right to that and we\u2019ve had to have discussions with the families and listen to them telling us the stories about all of a sudden credit cards app<\/a>earing in their names and things being purchased in their name, so we\u2019ve told \u2018em, you\u2019ve got to immediately shut down your credit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen multiple cases already,\u201d Burkett said. <\/p>\n

Joe Murphy, who lost his close friend and colleague, Brooklyn native Estelle Hedaya, told the station he was shaking with disgust and outrage. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can say is how low can you go?\u201d Murphy said, shaking his head. \u201cHere we are setting up a fund in her name for St. Jude\u2019s Hospital, doing something right, that\u2019s the way things should be done, not this crap.\u201d<\/p>\n

No arrests have yet been made.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrible,\u201d Burkett told Local 10 News<\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to put a face to these deeds right now, and I think all of South Florida is eager to see who would do something like this \u2013 what kind of person would do something like this. But I\u2019m looking forward to our police department apprehending them, and they are out there looking. I wouldn\u2019t want to be that person right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
