\u200bJerome Adams, the surgeon general<\/a> in the Trump administration, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s<\/a> relaxing masking guidelines amid a surge in coronavirus infections because of the delta variant \u201cpremature.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year Tony Fauci and I famously, prematurely, & wrongly advised against masks. I felt it was the best call at the time, but now regret it. I\u2019m worried the CDC also made a similarly premature, misinterpreted, yet still harmful call on masking in the face of delta variant,\u201d Adams said in a series of postings on Twitter<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n

He said the mask guidelines should pertain to areas where coronavirus cases are increasing and vaccine rates are declining.<\/p>\n

Adams made the comments a day after current CDC Director Rochelle Walensky warned of a \u201cpandemic of the unvaccinated\u201d as the delta variant spreads across the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeing outbreaks of cases in parts of the country that have low vaccination coverage, because unvaccinated people are at risk.\u201d <\/p>\n

I\u200bn Los Angeles County, a mandate took effect on Saturday that requires both vaccinated and unvaccinated people wear masks indoors. \u200b<\/p>\n

Adams blamed the confusion on the changing science<\/a> around the novel coronavirus, which was first reported in December 2019 in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200b\u201d\u200bWhat Dr. Fauci and I said was based on the science & conditions at the time, and amounted to \u200b\u2019\u200bsave the medical masks (which were all that was available) for the medical workers.\u200b\u2019\u200b Both the conditions & the science changed, but what people heard and held to was masks don\u2019t wo\u200brk,\u201d he said in another posting. \u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat @CDCgov said was based on the science & conditions at the time, and amounted to \u2018you\u2019re safe IF you vax it OR mask it,\u2019\u201d Adams said. \u201cBoth the conditions (rising cases) & the science (delta variant) changed, but what people heard and held to was masks were no longer needed.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

He predicted that states will soon enact mask mandates like Los Angeles County that \u201cconflict with mask guidance\u00a0@CDCgov issued a month ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sooner CDC says we were wrong & hits the reset button, the better. Trust me\u200b \u200b- I know more than anyone\u200b,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

Adams said based on the emerging data, the CDC should be advising people to \u201cvax it AND mask it\u201d in areas with increasing coronavirus cases\u00a0and positivity rates.<\/p>\n

\u201cCDC was well intended, but the message was misinterpreted, premature, & wrong. Let\u2019s fix it\u200b,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200bNew infections spiked 70 percent from the previous seven-day average to about 26,300 cases, Walensky said during a briefing on Friday.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

At the same time, hospital admissions jumped 36 percent to about 2,790 a day, while deaths from coronavirus rose 26 percent to 211 per day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the CDC<\/a>, more than 160 million Americans are vaccinated, representing about 48 percent of the population. \u200b
