More counties across the nation may follow Los Angeles\u2019 lead and impose indoor mask mandates as they battle new COVID-19 surges caused by highly contagious Delta variant, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, we are seeing rises, particularly among the unvaccinated in many parts of the country now,\u201d \u00a0Murthy told anchor Martha Raddatz on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n

Murthy said with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s guidelines on masks, there\u2019s the \u201cflexibility\u201d for local officials to impose mandates to help control outbreaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn areas where there are low numbers of vaccinated people, where cases are rising, it\u2019s very reasonable for counties to take more mitigation measures, like the mask rules coming out of L.A.,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I anticipate that will happ<\/a>en in other parts of the country \u2014 and that\u2019s not contradictory to the guidances the CDC has issued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Los Angeles County restored its\u00a0indoor mask mandate\u00a0on Saturday \u2014 even for those who have been vaccinated against the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an all-hands-on-deck moment,\u201d said the country\u2019s public health officer, Dr. Muntu Davis, adding that there had been more than 1,000 new cases daily for a week and \u201csubstantial community transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the country, around 97% of new cases are\u00a0among unvaccinated people\u00a0and at least 58% of those cases were believed to have been caused by the contagious Delta variant, ABC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n
