The Mets are having such a hard time staffing Citi Field with food and drink vendors amid a dry labor market that the service company responsible has turned to busing in labor from the home of the hated rival Philadelphia Phillies, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

Vendors who usually sling hot dogs and beers at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia have been shuttled on an hours-long bus ride to Queens to serve unsuspecting Mets diehards at some recent home game<\/a>s, according to employees and a union leader.<\/p>\n

Food service firm Aramark, which hires vendors at both ballparks, is so desperate to fill positions amid the coronavirus crisis and its related economic downturn, it\u2019s paying Philly-based workers to undertake the sometimes three-hour commute into enemy territory, said Ryan Nissim-Sabat, director of Union 174 in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re busing them back and forth and paying them for the ride,\u201d said Nissim-Sabat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy guess is they\u2019re struggling to fill positions because they don\u2019t pay a high enough wage,\u201d he said, adding that concessions workers make roughly $15 an hour. \u201cAt the end of [the] day we\u2019re still in a pandemic, and asking workers to be in front of 10,000 strangers at a stadium is still somewhat risky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be paying more.\u201d<\/p>\n

On June 11, as the Mets prepared for a home tilt against the Pittsburgh Pirates, some Citi Field workers noticed buses of food vendors from the Phillies\u2019 stadium arriving in Flushing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw buses full of workers in the parking lot and saw they came from Philly,\u201d said longtime Citi Field food vendor Bobby Lee. <\/p>\n

In recent months, the food service industry in New York City has been plagued by a shortage of workers, some of whom say they\u2019re better off collecting unemployment checks \u2014 fattened by COVID-19 relief bills \u2014 than returning to work.<\/p>\n

But Lee said that the arrangement has been going both ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s reciprocal,\u201d said Lee. \u201cThey\u2019ve been busing people there [to Philadelphia] too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aramark may simply want to fill vacant positions with people who already work for the company instead of hiring temps, said Nissim-Sabat \u2014 while arguing that it would be more efficient for the company to have vendors stick to home games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be hiring locally,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a waste of resources to send them back and forth.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Aramark rep said the company has been occasionally busing workers from Philadelphia to Citi Field for decades \u2014 but workers said it\u2019s been happ<\/a>ening more frequently in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

The rep didn\u2019t respond to inquiries about whether the company is having trouble hiring locally.<\/p>\n

Harold Kaufman, a spokesman for the Mets, declined to comment.<\/p>\n

For their part, Mets fans were split on whether they wanted to be served by the road team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would never work at Citizens Banks Park because it\u2019s that grit. I\u2019m a huge Mets fan so I would never want to work for the Phillies organization,\u201d said Jamie Lynch, a lifelong supporter who said he\u2019d only be OK with the outsiders if they were fellow Mets boosters \u2014 or at least agnostic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf [slugging first baseman Pete] Alonso hits a home run \u2026 and I\u2019m standing there and grabbing food and they are handing it to me and they are upset, it definitely crushes my vibe at the park,\u201d explained the 21-year-old Westchester resident wearing the jersey of Amazins ace Jacob deGrom. \u201cI want all pro-Mets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another sports buff, who declined to be identified by name, said that the important thing was the service, not who was providing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I want to buy a beer at a game, I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s from a Phillies worker,\u201d the fan said. \u201cI\u2019d be madder if I wanted a beer and couldn\u2019t get one.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
