\n There were cardboard cutouts in the stands, piped-in crowd noise and air high-fives following the Yankees\u2019 9-3 scrimmage win over the Mets on Saturday night at Citi Field, the first action for either club since the pandemic shutdown.<\/p>\n

It was a preview of what baseball will look like in New York \u2014 and throughout the majors \u2014 in this strange season.<\/p>\n

Aaron Boone called the phantom high-fives \u201creally weird, really awkward\u201d and said it wasn\u2019t rehearsed.<\/p>\n

And he wants to see something different once the games start to count.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, we can get a little creative, especially in the regular season,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of the celebration. \u201cIt\u2019s a big deal when you win a game and I don\u2019t want to lose that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The players, for the most part, made the most of the situation, pleased simply not to be facing teammates in intrasquad games following three weeks of spring training 2.0.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout fans, it\u2019s noticeable,\u2019\u2019 Zack Britton said. \u201cI didn\u2019t really think about it too much once the game got started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right-hander Mike King started the game for the Yankees and was initially thrown off by the pictures of fans behind home plate. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe little cardboard cutouts were weird,\u2019\u2019 King said. \u201cWhen I first walked out to the mound, I thought, \u2018Jeez.\u2019 But once you\u2019re out there facing hitters, you block it all out. You get in the zone with you and the catcher and you\u2019re working. You don\u2019t notice it after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the change in environment, rookie Mets manager Luis Rojas said it was \u201cexciting to take the field. \u2026 I know there was a lot of energy flying throughout the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rojas noted there were \u201cdefinitely a few differences.\u201d<\/p>\n

One he noted was the social<\/a>ly distanced pitching change he executed.<\/p>\n

But Britton didn\u2019t think any of it impacted the product on the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe game itself felt fairly normal,\u2019\u2019 the left-hander said. \u201cThe cutouts behind home plate were a cool idea. It breaks up just looking at seats back there. The pumped in crowd noise, you can\u2019t duplicate a real crowd, but it breaks up the silence and makes it easier to go out there and get some adrenaline.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
