“#US and allies blame China for massive Microsoft email hack<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The US and its allies slammed China on Monday for a wide range of \u201cmalicious cyber activities\u201d \u2014 including a massive hack of Microsoft\u2019s email service earlier this year that exposed the private information of thousands of Americans.<\/p>\n

In a scathing statement<\/a>, the White House accused China of fostering \u201can intelligence enterprise that includes contract hackers who also conduct unsanctioned cyber operations worldwide,\u201d blaming the country\u2019s\u00a0Ministry of State Security for everything from ransomware attacks and extortion to cryptocurrency heists and \u201crank theft.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In particular, the US slammed China for a breach of Microsoft\u2019s Exchange email service that was first disclosed this March.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the breach, hackers associated with the Ministry of State Security accessed thousands of email accounts associated with businesses, government offices and schools around the world, according to the White House. The hack likely \u201cnetted high-value espionage targets,\u201d the Wall Street Journal reported<\/a> at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Microsoft blamed the breach on Chinese hackers back in March \u2014 but Monday marks the first time the US government has backed up those claims \u201cwith a high degree of confidence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Microsoft and China\u2019s foreign ministry did not immedia<\/a>tely reply to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

US allies including the European Union and the UK also blamed<\/a> China for the Microsoft Exchange attack on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cyber attack on Microsoft Exchange Server by Chinese state-backed groups was a reckless but familiar pattern of behavior,\u201d said<\/a> UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, while the EU said Chinese hacks had resulted in \u201csignificant economic loss\u201d for European governments and companies.<\/p>\n

Also on Monday, the US Department of Justice announced charges against four Chinese nationals<\/a> whom they accused of working with China\u2019s Ministry of State Security to hack into systems of to companies, universities and governments to steal information \u2014 including research into infectious diseases. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The accusations come during a period of skyrocketing tensions between the world\u2019s two largest economies. Last week, the US slammed seven Chinese officials with sanctions over Beijing\u2019s crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong and warned international companies against doing business in the city.<\/p>\n
