If the subscription isn\u2019t to your liking, you can cancel anytime and your monthly subscription wouldn\u2019t be prorated, the company notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s brake it down a bit more to see if the monthly subscription is indeed a good bargain.<\/p>\n<p>First, if your Tesla\u2019s FSD computer doesn\u2019t have the Hardware 3.0 version, it\u2019s not eligible for the monthly rate. You can upgrade, of course, but that would cost you an extra $1,500,\u00a0<span>which is included in the $10,000 price of a direct purchase.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">New Tesla App shows FSD subscription. HW3 upgrade required for $1500 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/r5giBL3vX0\">pic.twitter.com\/r5giBL3vX0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Connell (@JohnPConnell) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnPConnell\/status\/1416218624109522948?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Secondly, the company \u201cmight change the monthly payment in the future, but will give you one month\u2019s notice before doing so.\u201d There\u2019s no information on what kind of changes to expect, but it\u2019s safe to say prices are more likely to go up than down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s assume, for the sake of argument, that the fee doesn\u2019t change at all and we have the \u2018alluring\u2019 $199 rate for the Basic Autopilot system.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see what this monthly fee would cost us for a year: 199 times 12 would make a total of $2,388.<\/p>\n<p>Based on this amount, with an uninterrupted subscription we would reach $10,000 in roughly four years time (4.187, to be specific).<\/p>\n<p>Four years, however, isn\u2019t such a long time for owning the same car. According to a study by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iseecars.com\/how-long-people-keep-cars-study\">iSeeCars.com<\/a>,\u00a0<span>the average length of new-vehicle ownership in the U.S. is\u00a0<\/span>8.4 years<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So if we owned a Tesla for an average of 8 years (which, I think, is a reasonable amount of time), and we chose an FSD monthly subscription throughout, that would cost $20,000. Yes, <em>double<\/em> the amount of the one-time subscription.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the monthly fee is a bargain only for those who\u2019d opt for FSD for a limited amount of time.
