James Lankford, R-Okla.<\/p>\n<p>When the government receives a passport application, the file enters a \u201clockbox\u201d and is given a secure number \u2013 a process that usually takes 24 hours and is now delaying applications up to six weeks, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lankford.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/07.19.21%20-%20Letter%20to%20Secretary%20Blinken%20re%20Passport%20Processing.pdf\">said Lankford in a letter<\/a> to Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The government contracts Citibank to run this procedure which the Treasury Department oversees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe operational delays in this key initial phase of the process are exacerbating the problems in other stages down the line,\u201d wrote Lankford. \u201cWe must address the problems at this stage by applying pressure and providing resources to Citibank to restore the turnaround time to 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Citibank source says the processing delays are all COVID- and staff-related. The State Department offered no comment on the lockbox problems.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201coperational issues\u201d are in addition to major passport staffing shortages due to the pandemic.\u00a0 In March, 2020, the State Department dramatically reduced its passport operations to protect staff from the spreading pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Americans resume <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing internationally, those without a valid passport will likely need to delay any summer trips abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. citizens who wish to travel overseas this summer and do not currently have a passport may need to make alternate travel plans,\u201d warned Rachel Arndt, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Passport Services. \u201cWe are looking at surging back to pre-pandemic staffing levels and additional staff for both government and contractor staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 passport processing employees are returning to 21 agencies across the country, according to the State Department.\u00a0Seventeen passport agencies are bringing back all staff members and five more are \u201canticipating approval to move to be completely open with all staff back in the office,\u201d said Arndt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Secretary of State Antony Blinken\" class=\"wp-image-18858626 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/blinken.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/blinken.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/blinken.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/blinken.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/blinken.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sen. James Lankford wrote a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS\/Tom Brenner\/Pool<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lankford maintains all 26 regional passport agencies \u201cshould be operating at a higher capacity than is presently happening\u201d and is urging the State Department to return to full staffing levels within the next two weeks, as local COVID restrictions allow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the worst of COVID-19 now behind us, these 26 centers should be serving the American people at full speed,\u201d wrote Lankford. He\u2019s also pushing the State Department to \u201csignificantly scale up\u201d in-person appointments.\u00a0Arndt described last-minute, in-person appointments as \u201cextremely limited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The State Department said wait times for regular passports are 12 to 18 weeks.\u00a0 Lankford claims the processing time is up to 24 weeks.\u00a0A congressional aide says the State Department has cited 18 to 24 weeks in phone briefings to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, it takes four to six weeks to get a regular passport.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
