In a statement, the \u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d composer and West End theater owner said that because of the UK\u2019s quarantine rules, his musical might close altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Saturday, as part of this [testing] process, we identified one positive case in a member of our cast who has a cameo in the show,\u201d Lloyd Webber said. \u201cAs a precautionary measure, we canceled two shows on Saturday while we carried out further tests on everyone backstage, which were negative.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The production then administered follow-up PCR tests, all of which came back negative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite this,\u201d Lloyd Webber said, \u201cthe impossible conditions created by the blunt instrument that is the government\u2019s isolation guidance mean that we cannot continue. We have been forced into a devastating decision, which will affect the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd Webber ended sounding like his Phantom about to tear down the Paris Opera House chandelier: \u201cFreedom Day has turned into closure day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But is he scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing the sets and wheeling out the ghost light at the Gillian Lynne Theatre? Sources close to the production insist that this is not a Lloyd Webber stunt, and that the state of the show really is up in the air. It\u2019s estimated that soon some 10 million Britons could be couch-bound.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The business-crippling strictures, which will be re-evaluated Aug. 16, have wreaked havoc on London\u2019s already-struggling theater business.<\/p>\n<p>In the past two weeks, big-budget musicals such as \u201cThe Prince of Egypt\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cHairspray\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playbill.com\/article\/west-end-productions-have-mixed-response-to-covid-19-surge\">have been forced to cancel weeks of performances <\/a>\u2014 even though most capacity and mask-wearing rules ended on Monday. \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,\u201d which is now back onstage at the Palladium, had to delay its start by 12 days earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese rules are the death knell for the West End,\u201d a source said. \u201cThe government doesn\u2019t care about us. They don\u2019t see us \u2014 until they turn up on our red carpets and ask to pose for pictures with our stars. Just take a look at [culture secretary] Oliver Dowden at \u2018Hairspray.\u2019 He couldn\u2019t wait to get a photo on the first preview with Michael Ball in his dress. Then, no less than a week later, \u2018Hairspray\u2019 is forced to close for a minimum of three weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only show currently running on the Great White Way, \u201cSpringsteen on Broadway,\u201d operates at 100 percent capacity, mandates audience members be vaccinated and has so far had no performance disruptions. But that production has just two performers \u2014 Bruce Springsteen and his wife, Patti Scialfa. <\/p>\n<p>Still, sources say Broadway should avoid the West End\u2019s money-draining turmoil. When the big Broadway musicals \u2014 such as \u201cWicked,\u201d \u201cHamilton,\u201d \u201cThe Lion King\u201d and \u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d \u2014 return in September, the casts and crews will be required to be vaccinated, and anybody who tests positive for COVID will likely be sent home without canceling performances. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI applaud London for taking so many steps forward for trying to get artists back to work, but this is why Broadway is waiting,\u201d a Broadway source said of New York theater\u2019s later return. \u201cWe can\u2019t afford a 10-day shutdown.
