House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy\u00a0(R-Calif.)\u00a0tapp<\/a>ed a mix of\u00a0moderates and allies of\u00a0former President Donald Trump to serve on the\u00a0Jan. 6 select committee, two sources confirmed to The Post on Monday.<\/p>\n

McCarthy\u00a0named Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks of Indiana, House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis of Illinois, House Judiciary Ranking Member Jim Jordan of Ohio, Rep. Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota and Troy Nehls of Texas to serve on the panel, the sources said.<\/p>\n

Banks, Jordan and Nehls were three of dozens of Congressional Republicans who\u00a0objected to certifying\u00a0the electoral vote count following last November\u2019s presidential election. The certification precipitated the \u201cStop the Steal\u201d rally that led to Trump\u2019s supporters breaching the Capitol building and disrupting the joint certification session. The chaos resulted in the deaths of five people, including a US Capitol Police officer.<\/p>\n

The House passed a resolution to create the select panel largely along party lines last month after the Senate blocked a measure that would have created a 9\/11-style bipartisan commission.<\/p>\n

McCarthy and other Republicans had argued that a select committee was unnecessary due to ongoing federal investigations into the riot, which have led to more than 500 arrests of suspected participants. They also noted that two Senate committees had already examined the events of that day \u2013\u00a0their report was issued last month<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and accused Democrats of trying to pin the riot on the GOP ahead of next year\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

The minority leader told reporters Monday that his mission was to \u201cnever put the Capitol Police, or this Capitol, in that position again.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCarthy added that authorities should have used the protests surrounding the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the fall of 2018 as preparation for the events of Jan. 6.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should never allow this place to be overrun,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will have protests and others again. It should never get to this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Banks said in a statement that he had accepted McCarthy\u2019s appointment to the select committee \u201cbecause we need leaders who will force the Democrats and the media<\/a> to answer questions so far ignored. Among them, why was the Capitol unprepared and vulnerable to attack on January 6?<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Democrats were serious about investigating political violence, this committee would be studying not only the January 6 riot at the Capitol, but also the hundreds of violent political riots last summer when many more innocent Americans and law-enforcement officers were attacked,\u201d Banks added. \u201cAnd of course, the committee would not overlook the Good Friday murder of [US Capitol Police]\u00a0Officer Billy Evans\u00a0that was perpetrated by a far-left extremist.<\/p>\n

Banks then charged that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) \u201ccreated this committee solely to malign conservatives and to justify the Left\u2019s authoritarian agenda\u201d and vowed he would \u201cnot allow this committee to be turned into a forum for condemning millions of Americans because of their political beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelosi (D-Calif.) previously tapped House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) to lead the panel, with Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Elaine Luria (D-Va.) and former House GOP leadership member Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) also serving.<\/p>\n

The committee is scheduled to\u00a0hold its first hearing next week, when it will hear testimony from four members of law enforcement about their experience on that fateful day.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
