{"id":303154,"date":"2021-07-20T03:15:25","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T00:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/woke-women-are-ditching-the-wing-for-workspace-alternatives\/"},"modified":"2021-07-20T03:15:25","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T00:15:25","slug":"woke-women-are-ditching-the-wing-for-workspace-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/woke-women-are-ditching-the-wing-for-workspace-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"#Woke women are ditching the Wing for workspace alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Woke women are ditching the Wing for workspace alternatives<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When Michelle Ward, 43, heard about the controversy at the women\u2019s only co-working space collective, the Wing, last summer, she canceled her membership.<\/p>\n<p>Ward, who works as CEO of the business coaching company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.90daybusinesslaunch.com\/\">90 Day Business Launch<\/a>, said that she \u201ccan\u2019t believe\u201d that the company is still in business. \u201cI just personally didn\u2019t want to be associated with the Wing and what they stood for,\u201d she told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Last March, after a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/17\/magazine\/the-wing.html\">New York Times story<\/a> alleging the Wing\u2019s unethical and racist treatment of employees, the feminist haven received a tidal wave of backlash. Former staffers came together to create the Instagram account \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/flewthecoup\/\">Flew The Coup<\/a>,\u201d where aggrieved ex-employees started speaking up. A February <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2021\/02\/what-happened-to-the-wing.html\">essay in the Cut<\/a> called the collective \u201can artifact of the Trump era.\u201d\u00a0Since May, five of the 11 original spaces remain in operation \u2014\u00a0Soho, Bryant Park, Flatiron, West Hollywood and San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>For many former Winglets, the controversy is reason enough to take their laptops and lattes elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 2016, the Wing catered to the modern career woman; it was billed as a chic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> club, built for high-powered feminists. There, she pays $810 for an annual digital membership, which gives her access to the two-floor space with rooftop views of the Empire State Building for an extra $20 a day (it\u2019s $2,160 a year for unlimited access to the entire space).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the Wing, Luminary doesn\u2019t have a rigorous vetting process. Now, she\u2019s joined Luminary, a similar women\u2019s co-working space.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Zandy Mangold<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn the three weeks I\u2019ve been a Luminary member, I\u2019ve already connected with more people than I had being part of the Wing for a year,\u201d said Ward, who is already using Luminary\u2019s online networking platform to search for a virtual assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Cessie Cerrato, a 40-year-old publicist from the Upper East Side, also ditched her Wing membership for Luminary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just feel more at home at Luminary,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re friendlier, they\u2019re nicer. Even before COVID, I felt like [at the Wing] it was a lot of smoke and mirrors in terms of inclusivity. I felt like it was a lot of show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having been on a strict diet plan before her wedding, Cerrato found the Wing\u2019s \u201cno outside food\u201d rule challenging. \u201cThey wanted you to buy the very expensive and mediocre food at their cafe,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes I\u2019d just take my food and go outside or eat it in the stairwell.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sara N., 31, who works in advertising and declined to share her last name for professional reasons, applied for a Wing membership quickly after its second location opened in Soho in 2017. After eight months of radio silence, her application\u00a0was only accepted after she name-dropped a friend.<\/p>\n<p>She was excited to support a female-owned business, but quickly discovered drawbacks. When she brought her younger brother along with her to pick up her ID card, he was immediately told to leave the premises. But I don\u2019t believe in being a part of the problem. That kind of rubbed me the wrong way.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesi Taylor Cruz, 31, who uses the pronoun \u201cthey,\u201d said they were also made to feel uncomfortable at the Wing. The grad student and sustainability educator from Washington Heights was drawn to the space after learning about its child-care program, the Little Wing. <\/p>\n<p>But as a black woman with vitiligo, a chronic condition that causes patches of skin to turn white, Cruz said that judgment from other members was blatant. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of looks, a lot of stares,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cBecause I\u2019m not a basic, generic white woman, they were like, \u2018Who is this woman in our space?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"554\" height=\"586\" alt=\"Michelle Ward\" class=\"wp-image-18858903 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Michelle-Ward-center-at-The-Wing-Flatiron.png?w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Michelle-Ward-center-at-The-Wing-Flatiron.png?w=554 554w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 554px\"\/><figcaption>Michelle Ward (center) at The Wing in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, the creator of Flew the Coup \u2014 who asked for anonymity due to \u201csafety\u201d concerns, but said she used to work at the Wing\u2019s front desk\u00a0\u2014 said that the group is \u201ccurrently in conversations\u201d with the Wing leadership, including co-founder and current COO Lauren Kassan, about working to repair the relationship with former staffers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group is asking for the Wing to drop the NDAs of former staffers and raise money for their employee relief fund. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>We have spent a lot of time reflecting on the culture and company we built,\u201d said a spokesperson for the Wing in a statement to The Post. \u201cSince the Wing has been shut down for the past year, we have had the opportunity to evaluate our operations and culture. In order to best serve our employees and members, we have implemented a culture code to outline our values and expectations of members and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company has also brought on an advisory board and partnered with<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jopwell.com\/\"> Jopwell<\/a>, a career advancement company that focuses on diversity and inclusion.\u00a0Members are now allowed to bring in their own outside food. Due to limited amenities following COVID-19 protocols, membership prices have been reduced to $150 per month. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still moving [forward], but they know they can\u2019t move without us,\u201d Flew the Coup\u2019s creator said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be very interesting to see who continues to support them \u2014 and obviously it\u2019s entitled white women and women who just want that power.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async defer src=\"https:\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
