“#Matt Bomer on ‘American Horror Stories,’ ghosts, Lady Gaga<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Matt Bomer said it was a \u201cno brainer\u201d to star in the two-part first episode of \u201cAmerican Horror Stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan Murphy gave me a loose pitch for what his ideas were for this particular episode, and nobody is a better pitchman. I\u2019ve been home for this entire pandemic taking care of my family<\/a>, and this filmed around the corner,\u201d Bomer, 43, told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new anthology series<\/a> (Thursdays, FX on Hulu<\/a>) is a spinoff of the \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d franchise. In the original show, each season has a different season-long plotline, while \u201cAmerican Horror Stories\u201d breaks it up further and tells a different scary story each episode, in the same style as \u201cBlack Mirror.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the two-part episode \u201cRubber (WO)man Part One\u201d and \u201cPart Two\u201d (now streaming<\/a>), Bomer stars as Michael, a man who\u2019s moving into a haunted Los Angeles house with his husband Troy (Gavin Creel) and their troubled teen daughter, Scarlett (Sierra McCormick). As Michael and Troy renovate their new property to prepare to open it for ghost-theme<\/a>d retreats, their project starts to go awry, their relationship becomes strained as they argue about money, and their daughter begins acting out \u2014 and viewing R-rated material online that disturbs her fathers \u2014 as local teen girls go missing and a mysterious figure in a black bodysuit skulks around with a knife.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most challenging aspect in a show like this is keeping it human and grounded when circumstances can get extreme,\u201d said Bomer. \u201cAnd keeping a sense of humor about it. This franchise has always done a good job of making a lot of our fears sensational but also boiling it down to a human level. There are a lot of parental fears that anybody who has kids in 2021 can relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bomer is a veteran of the \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d franchise, having previously appeared in \u201cAmerican Horror Story: Freak Show\u201d and starred in \u201cAmerican Horror Story: Hotel\u201d in 2016 as Donovan, the companion to The Countess (Lady Gaga). So while his two-part episode of\u00a0\u201cAmerican Horror Stories\u201d soon dissolved into outrageous territory \u2014 complete with plenty of dead bodies and blood \u2014 Bomer said his previous experience made him feel right at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I feel that ever since the blood orgy I did with Lady Gaga, everything is pretty tame after that,\u201d he said. \u201cI was head to toe \u2018Carrie\u2019 prom scene-esque levels of blood. They basically wrapped us up like sardines in tarp in between takes of that [scene]. It was Gaga and I, and these two wonderful actors who we\u2019d just met 10 minutes before, lying on a tarp next to each other sandwiched in. And they\u2019d peel the tarp off and we\u2019d do the next take. It was very strange. So after that, any amount of corn syrup [for fake blood] is pretty tame. That was a wild experience. It was certainly memorable.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the two-parter first episode of \u201cAmerican Horror Stories\u201d progresses and Michael\u2019s life becomes more chaotic, it becomes clear that ghosts are very real. Bomer himself has had experiences with them in his life, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI do believe in them to a certain extent \u2026 If you\u2019re not the first occupant of a home, there is a history there, there\u2019s an energy that can carry over into your experience.\u00a0I stayed in this hotel in Santa Fe when I was doing [2016 film] \u2018The Magnificent Seven\u2019 and there was a sound in the night like someone was doing some cleaning work \u2026 So I asked the front desk, \u2018Who is cleaning at 3 a.m.?\u2019 and they were like, \u2018Oh that\u2019s just the ghost!\u2019 It turned out I was staying in a known haunted hotel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t know that before. I think if I had, I probably\u00a0would have checked out fast.\u201d<\/p>\n
